CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ? A proposed $250,000 study on the feasibility of reviving the University of Wyoming's long-dead baseball and softball programs struck out this week in the state Legislature.

Proposed by state Republican Sen. Ray Peterson, of Cowley, the study would have looked into building an indoor field to accommodate games.

But the idea got a lukewarm reaction at best from lawmakers and university athletic officials.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/A4TR41 ) that UW's baseball program was canceled in 1996. The softball program was canceled several years before.

Peterson said a recent study showed 69 Wyoming students were playing college baseball for out-of-state schools.

This week, both the House of Representatives and the Senate voted to remove the study proposal from their proposed budget bills.

Well: In Israel, a New Approach to Organ Donation

One of the most agonizing spots in medicine is the ?transplant list.? When I?ve referred patients for organ transplant ? heart, liver, kidney ? it is the start of an anguished wait. The clock ticks for my patient as we watch her clinical status decline, all the while harboring that excruciating hope that someone will die soon enough to make an organ available. In the case of kidney donation, which can come from a live donor, it is the desperate hope that someone will decide to make this enormous personal sacrifice.

Some of my patients have died waiting, which is, sadly, not an unusual outcome. It is estimated that 18 patients on the waiting list in America die every day. In the United States, as in many countries, we rely on a simple system of altruism, or what might be called the opt-in approach. We hope that people will sign organ donor cards because they think it is the right thing to do, or that families will consent to donation after a loved one has had brain death because it will help someone else. But these mechanisms do not result in nearly enough organs for all the patients who need them.

Other countries, like Spain and Austria, have tried an opt-out approach, called presumed consent. Every patient who dies is assumed to have consented to organ donation, unless they have specifically declined. However, this hasn?t necessarily increased the number of organ donations, in part because doctors find it extremely difficult to go against family wishes if surviving family members are strongly opposed to donation.

A third way to increase donations is being pioneered in Israel. Until now, Israel ranked at the bottom of Western countries on organ donation. Jewish law proscribes desecration of the dead, which has been interpreted by many to mean that Judaism prohibits organ donation. Additionally, there were rabbinic issues surrounding the concept of brain death, the state in which organs are typically harvested. As a result, many patients died waiting for organs.

So Israel has decided to try a new system that would give transplant priority to patients who have agreed to donate their organs. In doing so, it has become the first country in the world to incorporate ?nonmedical? criteria into the priority system, though medical necessity would still be the first priority.

The Israeli program was initiated by Dr. Jacob Lavee, a cardiothoracic surgeon who heads the heart transplant program of Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. In 2005, he had two ultra-Orthodox, Haredi Jewish patients on his ward who were awaiting heart transplants. The patients confided in him that they would never consider donating organs, in accordance with Haredi Jewish beliefs, but that they had absolutely no qualms about accepting organs from others.

That Haredi Jews would not donate organs was a well-known fact in Israel. But this was the first time anyone had openly admitted the paradox to Dr. Lavee.

The unfairness of a segment of society unwilling to donate organs, but happy to accept them, nagged at Dr. Lavee. After he operated on both patients, giving each a new lease on life, he put together a proposal that would give priority to those patients willing to donate their organs.

Working with rabbis, ethicists, lawyers, academics and members of the public, he and other medical experts worked to create a new law in 2010, which will take full effect this year: if two patients have identical medical needs for an organ transplant, priority will be given to the patient who has signed a donor card, or whose family member has donated an organ in the past.

A critical component of the law?s success was engaging the country?s highly influential religious leadership, which had long been resistant to organ donation. Even among the half of the country that is devoutly secular, when faced with death and whether to donate organs. ?Suddenly the families become very religious,? said Dr. Yael Haviv, the medical director of the organ donation program at Sheba. ?Suddenly they ask the rabbis.?

But in the Talmud, saving a life supersedes most everything, and many commandments may be transgressed if the goal is to save a life. Based on this, the argument could be made that organ donation fulfilled one of the highest religious virtues. The lawmakers also agreed on a definition of brain death that was acceptable to the vast majority of rabbis (though not the ultra-Orthodox Haredi), as well as local imams, making organ donation kosher to a large segment of the population.

This was accompanied by a huge public awareness campaign about organ donation, with radio, TV, billboard and newspaper ads promoting the new priority system and countering the perception that Jewish law forbids donation. Shopping centers and coffee houses were blanketed with organ donation information. The response was overwhelming, as people registered in droves as potential donors.

?We were swamped,? says Tamar Ashkenazi, the director of the National Transplant Center of Israel. The machine that prints the organ donation cards usually handles 3,000 a month ? 5,000 if two workers are dedicated full-time to operating it. During the 10 weeks of the publicity campaign, 70,000 Israelis registered for organ donation cards.

The consent rate from families has already increased, and the number of organs available for patients has increased in parallel. Transplants have so far increased by more than 60 percent over all this year.

Other aspects of the new law provide ?fair compensation? for living donors that covers 40 days of lost wages, plus expenses related to the donation. ?This serves to remove the disincentives to donation,? Dr. Lavee says. Kidney transplants from live donors ? nearly always from family members of patients ? increased dramatically.

The new system, though, is not without its critics. Many say that any ?nonmedical? factors in organ allocation are inherently unethical. Some say that the law enshrines religious discrimination, since Haredi patients decline to donate based on their religious beliefs.

But many feel that the new law adds a measure of fairness to the process, and now there are more organs available for everyone. It will be interesting to see how things play out when the priority system goes into effect on April 1.

Aggressive infections in hospitals are an increasing health problem worldwide. The development of bacterial resistance is alarming. Now a young Danish scientist has found a natural substance in a Chilean rainforest plant that effectively supports the effect of traditional treatment with antibiotics.

PhD Jes Gitz Holler from the University of Copenhagen discovered in a research project a compound that targets a particular resistance mechanism in yellow staphylococci. The development of resistance in these specific bacteria is extremely rapid. Bacterial strains that do not respond to treatment have already been found in the USA and Greece.

"I have discovered a natural substance in a Chilean avocado plant that is active in combination treatment with traditional antibiotics. Resistant bacteria have an efflux pump in their bacterial membrane that efficiently pumps out antibiotics as soon as they have gained access. I have identified a natural substance that inhibits the pumping action, so that the bacteria's defence mechanisms are broken down and the antibiotic treatment allowed to work," explains Jes Gitz Holler.

Jes Gitz Holler gathered specimens of the plant, which comes from the Persea family, in Chile, where the Mapuche people use the leaves of the avocado plant to heal wounds. The results have been published in Journal of Microbial Chemotherapy.

Synthetic chemistry for sustainable production

The so-called MIC value is the lowest possible concentration of an antibiotic that inhibits the bacterial growth. With his compound from the medicine chest of the Mapuche people, Jes Gitz Holler can lower the MIC value by at least eight times:

"The natural compound has great potential and perhaps in the longer term can be developed into an effective drug to combat resistant staphylococci. At this time there are no products on the market that target this same efflux-inhibitor mechanism. We want to improve the active substance using synthetic chemistry in the laboratory. That will also ensure sustainable production of a potential drug while protecting rainforest plants," continues Jes Gitz Holler.

Jes Gitz Holler emphasises that a commercial product will benefit the Mapuche people. At present there is a written agreement between the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the representative of the Mapuche people, Alfonso Guzm?n, PhD, who helped procure the plant material.

Yellow staphylococcus ? Staphylococcus aureus ? is the most common cause of infection in wounds from an operation. However, the bacteria can be the cause of many diseases, from abscesses and food poisoning to life-threatening infections such as infective endocarditis and sepsis. The bacteria have been a major problem in hospitals worldwide since the 1940s, and up to now the drug industry has managed to develop new antibiotics in step with the increasingly aggressive behaviour of the bacteria. Unfortunately, that development appears to be turning:

"For all intents and purposes, the drug industry is not pursuing research into new antibiotics. It is simply too expensive relative to possible earnings, and there is more money in drugs to treat chronic diseases such as diabetes. Therefore, the bacteria are winning the race ? resistance increases and treatment options are scarce. Research will have to find new paths and natural substances are one of them," emphasises Jes Gitz Holler.

Movie review: This Means War

Consumed by her job as a product tester, uptight Lauren, played aptly by Reese Witherspoon, decides she needs a man in her life. Refusing to take "no" for an answer however, FDR shows up at one of her focus groups where he manipulates her into going out with him. What she doesn't know is that Tuck and FDR are not only kick-butt CIA agents, they are also best friends.

Okay, so the premise is a bit implausible, but this scalene love triangle makes for good fun, especially when the two testosterone-riddled dudes up the stakes of their "bromance" and declare all is fair in love and war. The fun of this film is encapsulated in the scene where both Tuck and FDR sneak into Lauren's house to set up hidden cameras and search for clues about what makes her tick. Both men are so stealthy, neither knows the other is there all while Lauren makes popcorn and giddily raps "This is How We Do It." There are other great fantasy-fulfilling scenes, like when Tuck takes Lauren to fly on a trapeze -- a lovely metaphor for love. (Sorry, men, you'd better up your game).

While the most exciting chemistry comes from Hardy and Pine, the real comedic gem in this film is Chelsea Handler. Her scathing, sometimes raunchy one-liners had me laughing out loud and wishing she had more screen time. Reese is very likable, giving her all to the comedy. It was very refreshing to see Tom Hardy and Chris Pine as two new male romantic leads -- in the same movie, no less -- giving the two Ryans some well-earned time off. One thing this movie does very well is keep the viewer guessing which hot guy Witherspoon will choose -- a pretty tough choice if you ask me.

Bottom line: If you want to laugh with your man or BFFs, go see This Means War, a fun comedy full of eye-candy that doesn't take itself too seriously.

FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the housing crisis is damaging not only the U.S. economy, but also what it means to be middle class in America.

Obama says that while government alone can't fix the problem, Congress must do what it can to help struggling homeowners.

In a veiled shot at his Republican rival Mitt Romney, Obama says homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage shouldn't have to sit and wait for the housing market to hit bottom. Romney has previously said the housing market needs to bottom out.

Obama is outlining a proposal to allow millions more homeowners to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates even if they owe more than their homes are worth. The White House says the average borrower could save about $3,000 annually.

It's been over fifteen years since MasterCard, Visa and Europay developed EMV technology to make your credit cards more secure, but it has yet to really catch on here in the US. However, MasterCard has created a master plan to help usher in the EMV era and sound the death knell for the magnetic strip. Why? The EMV infrastructure is far more fraud-resistant because each transaction is authenticated dynamically using cryptographic algorithms and a user-specific PIN. That's why MasterCard plans to help build out the EMV POS infrastructure by April of next year and have its secure e-payment system functioning at ATMs, online and with its myriad mobile payment options as well. For now, the nuts and bolts of how the credit card firm plans to bring its plan to fruition are few, but more details will be forthcoming, and there's a bit more info at the source and PR below.
