When you come into a lump sum of money, for instance from a tax return or an inheritance, always put a portion of it aside for a retirement account.
Do as much as you feel you can afford, but as a rule at least ten percent, if not twenty. This will help make up for slower saving years and always keep your investments moving forward. Plan out how much you need, and how much you need to save each year. Don?t forget to add in the returns on your investments, like a 401k or IRA. Making a plan is key to any successful retirement savings.
Invest in an IRA (independent retirement account), and consider using a Roth, especially if you?ve already got a traditional 401k. IRAs are a lot like 401ks, except with an IRA you have a lot more control. You can set up one of these accounts at most financial companies. The difference between a Roth and a traditional IRA is largely in how you will handle your taxes, both now and in retirement.
Feeling safe with your money is a great way to live life. Stocks have returned a much greater amount then to people who have invested in bonds. There is no doubt that stocks are they way to go, but in today?s world, not to many people feel very safe with the market. If you have stocks, then when should you make adjustments to turn those into bonds?
Take the Lehman Brothers for example. Their Aggregate Bond performed well in its day. Most people were used to a solid eight to fifteen percent return per year. Now we all know what happened with the Lehman Brothers, as well as many others during the past couple of years. Today, there have been billions of dollars lost that people once trusted with institutions that no one thought could fail.
Many people think that during retirement they will be much happier than they are now. This is not the case in most people?s reality once they retire. I myself am guilty of thinking that when I get to a certain place in life, I will have arrived. That is only an illusion in our heads that we have created. You will want to be doing things that you enjoy doing while you are working.
Planning the very end of your work career can be stressful. Just like everything else in life, this requires a plan. Most people know that something has to be done, but they just don?t know what to do and where to start. Now that you have made the necessary calculations and know that your nest egg will be enough to support you and your family, we will go over a few tips to help you prepare for the time when you retire.
Get rid of your debt. Pay down all of your credit cards, mortgages, and personal loans while you are working. If you don?t have high expenses each month that are fixed, this can help you live nicely off of a fixed income for a long time to come.
While you are still working, make sure that you are paying your biggest bills down. You will want to pay down your college education and any improvements to your home that you want to make.

LONDON?On day three of his overseas tour, Mitt Romney woke up to unfriendly headlines from the British media, who continue to trash him for telling NBC News that he found preparations for the Olympics here "disconcerting."
"Mitt the Twit," declared The Sun tabloid, trashing Romney as a "wannabe president."
The Independent headlined their take on Romney's trip, "Romneyshambles"?accusing him of not only committing a diplomatic gaffe but later "the cardinal sin of U.S. politics, flip-flopping" on his criticism.
The Daily Telegraph suggested Romney's "Olympic gaffe" had overshadowed his trip to London.
Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Mail slammed Romney as "devoid of charm, offensive and a wazzock."
Romney's comments led newscasts on both Sky News and the BBC on Thursday night and early Friday morning, just hours ahead of the Olympic opening ceremonies here.
"Is this guy really prepared to be president?" one Sky News reporter asked in his Thursday night report about Romney's day in London. The reporter trashed the GOP candidate's comments as "just daft."
Romney has repeatedly tried to dial back on his criticism, first in a news conference Thursday outside 10 Downing Street, where he had met with British Prime Minister David Cameron?who had been publicly critical of Romney's remarks earlier in the day.
[Get more updates from Romney's overseas trip by following @hollybdc on Twitter]
In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan Thursday night, Romney again tried to contain the controversy, telling the CNN host he believes the London games will be successful.
"It's great. It's absolutely fabulous," Romney said of being in London for the games. "You know I'd never been to an Olympics before I was given the Olympic job. I mean I've done the same thing everybody else did. I watched the games on TV. But to actually be here and to experience not just the athletes but also the volunteers who are working hard and excited, and then the whole community comes together? It's fabulous."
Citing the "enthusiasm" of the people in London, Romney added, "I think you are going to see terrific games that will be long time in our memories."

High blood pressure, also referred to as the ?silent killer? is usually the symptom of some other malfunction within your body. Though there are actual organic options and/or home remedies to reduce blood pressure, physicians use medications to fight the ?silent killer.?
The issue with this is always that you become a victim of the annoying blood pressure medicine side effects. Medical professionals are usually satisfied with recommending medications because it is effective short- term in that it may actually lower the blood pressure.
It is very important to know that drugs don?t cure hypertension. They?re more of a short-term fix. Sometimes the drugs make a patient experience more serious pain in other areas. The doctors generally prescribe four main forms of medications to lower blood pressure level. The medications are diuretics, beta- blockers, ACE inhibitors and also calcium channel blockers. Hypertension certainly is the result of irresponsible lifestyle choices; the medicines are masks, not really a cure.
Virtually any drug with the least amount of toxic can cause terrible side effects. Listed here are the medications as well as their individual side effects. Even as the blood pressure might decrease you might undoubtedly feel worse on the drugs.
Blood Pressure Medicine Negative Effects:
1. Diurectics
The very least toxic of all of the anti- hypertension drug treatment-diuretics are just dehydrators, meaning they are used to eliminate fluid out of your body through the kidneys. The problem with this way of lowering blood pressure is you are also eliminating vital minerals like potassium, sodium, magnesium and also calcium.
Draining these minerals out of your body will cause electrolyte imbalances within your body. Diuretics also lead to irregular heartbeat, gout, kidney damage or perhaps failure, abnormal cholesterol, uremia, hyperglycemia, erectile dysfunction, heartburn, visual disruptions, headaches and anemia.
2. Beta- Blockers
Beta- Blockers slow up the force of your heart contractions. While the heartbeat decreases, the blood pressure lowers. This can be a dangerous cardiac drug; hence there?ll be apparent indications of severe heart problems. You may experience congestive heart failure (basically a heart attack) or perhaps arrhythmias.
3. ACE Inhibitors
ACE Inhibitors is generally a ?chemical attack.? The drug blocks the discharge of the molecule, Angiotensin which truly lifts the blood pressure. In addition, this agent is a protective mechanism that is made to keep your ?homostasis.? This eventually causes a chemical turbulence mainly because it tosses off your biological balance.

FRESNO, Calif.?? Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the crystal blue sky stretches up from the horizon.
Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road where in the east iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.
The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.
"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager, who was inspired by a cross-country camping trip he took after graduation. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."
The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.
Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.
Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.
The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.
Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world?
"I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."
As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.
"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."
The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered for this special look."
Joe Zarki at Joshua Tree says the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's peripherally located visitors' centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.
With summer temperatures hovering near 120 degrees and heat stroke warnings common, this time of year only the hearty visit Death Valley, which at 282 below sea level boasts the lowest locale in the U.S.
"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman of the 3,000-square-mile park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here ? especially in the middle of the winter."

A federal appeals court suggested Friday that it may not retreat from its ruling last year that isolated human genes can be patented.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit was revisiting its 2-1 ruling last July that largely upheld Myriad Genetics Inc.?s ?patents on two genes that can signal if a woman faces greater risk of developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer. Myriad?s patents allow the company to be the exclusive U.S. commercial provider of genetic screenings for the diseases.
Patients and medical groups argue Myriad is trying to patent ?products of nature,? which can?t be patented. They say the gene patents interfere with medical treatment and scientific research, claims that Myriad disputes.
This spring, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Federal Circuit to reconsider the Myriad case in light of the justices? new ruling in a different patent case that tightened rules on medical-testing patents.
But during 45 minutes of oral arguments Friday, the three Federal Circuit judges reiterated many of the views they had expressed in their earlier opinion.
Judge Alan Lourie, who wrote the lead opinion that favored Myriad, again made comments suggesting he agreed with Myriad?s arguments that the company wasn?t patenting a product of nature. He said the process of extracting and isolating a gene from the human body made the gene chemically distinct from the DNA that exists naturally.
Judge Lourie also suggested the Supreme Court?s recent ruling, which invalidated two Prometheus Laboratories patents on a diagnostic test for monitoring drug dosages, raised different legal issues that didn?t apply directly to Myriad?s gene patents.
Judge William Bryson, who dissented in the earlier Myriad ruling, again appeared to stick to his belief that, while Myriad?s discovery of the breast cancer genes entailed difficult work, the gene sequences themselves were unpatentable scientific facts.
That left Judge Kimberly Moore, who provided a second vote for Myriad last year in a concurring opinion. Judge Moore again noted that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has allowed patents on DNA sequences for decades, and she said that disturbing the industry?s long-held expectations risked upending years of financial investments in scientific innovations. ?There?s a lot of money at stake here,? she said.
Judge Moore also told the challengers that one of their renewed arguments against Myriad, based on language in the Supreme Court?s ruling, was ?a waste of time and space.?
The judge, however, repeated her previous concerns about whether some of Myriad?s claimed inventions are really patentable, leaving her vote at least somewhat uncertain.
A decision is expected in the coming months. It is likely the losing party will appeal to the Supreme Court.

29-year-old Natalie Coughlin, born August 23, 1982, in Vallejo, California is a seasoned Olympic veteran. However, going into her third Olympics, Coughlin's Olympic role has changed. The most shocking change is that she won't be representing Team USA in any individual events.
"I have just a relay on the first day, and then I'm done and there to support my teammates," Coughlin told reporters after a disappointing trials run in Omaha.
Coughlin opted to add the 100 butterfly to her trials schedule for the first time, after a change in the normal trials events order placed the butterfly before the 100 backstroke. Whether or not this choice affected Coughlin's trials outcome is up for speculation.
After failing to qualify for the Olympics in either the 100 butterfly or the 100 backstroke, Coughlin told reporters:
"I'm not as disappointed as everyone expects me to be. You can't cry over what you can't control."
Due to NBC rights holder restrictions, the following video interview is only viewable until 7/27/2012:
In 1998, at age 15, Coughlin became the first swimmer to qualify for Summer Nationals in all 14 events.
She followed this with an incredible high school career, in which she broke national high school records in the 200 IM (1:58.45) and 100 backstroke (52.86).
Coughlin graduated from UC Berkeley in 2005, after competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics. She is an 11-time Olympic medalist, so far earning three Gold, four silver, and four bronze.
In Beijing 2008, she became the first modern female Olympic athlete to win six medals in one Olympics. Adding to this accomplishment, she was the first woman to win the 100 backstroke in two consecutive Olympics. Not to mentions she was the first woman to swim the 100 meter backstroke in under a minute.
After the 100 butterfly, her first race at trials in Omaha, Coughlin backed up her decision to swim the race by saying, "It's just good to have the opportunity to place yourself on the team in as many events as possible. My goal is to earn my ticket to London this week."
As the week continued on, Coughlin eventually managed to earn her ticket, by placing sixth in the 100 freestyle finals. This placing puts her as a relay alternate in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay.
"First or sixth, it doesn't really matter, I'm really just excited to earn my ticket to London," said Coughlin.

There is probably no worse aggravation than having hand or wrist pains and you do not realize just how important your hands are until you are unable to use them because they hurt so dog-gone badly. Just because you are in pain, does not mean you have severe arthritis or carpal tunnel, you may very well just have strained them from overuse or repetitious motion.
With all the technology we have now days, it?s very easy to strain your hands by trying to work the key-board on a mobile phone, or worse typing all day on a key board, but there are solutions to these problems and one of them, the one I ,most prefer also has something to do with technology. That?s right, I use technology to overcome the forces from the very technology that is hurting my hands and challenging my dexterity.
For instance, instead of typing all day on the key-board, why not invest in some voice recognition software. There are several versions to choose from; IBM makes a very powerful speech recognition software package. Microsoft includes it in their Vista Operating system, for both navigation and for use in word processor and email programs. Better yet, why not go buy the Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.0 and load that software on your computer.

ou ever just have that urge to utterly annihilate something? I don?t mean in real life, and if so you might want to get some medication, or see a doctor; because you?ve got problems. For the rest of you who?ve been able to successfully separate fiction from reality you know those days where nothing is working out, days where you wouldn?t be entirely surprised if you were hit by a bus, or blown up by homicidal, mass-murdering terrorist cheerleaders? ?
Gaming has take off on both consoles and PC platforms, and without getting into another one of those stupid-ass, and utterly pointless debates about which one is better, everyone has games that they play to ?relieve stress.? Now, some people settle for Call of Duty online, but is that really the best choice? I mean, we are in fact looking to calm down and release some of that anger that the day has brought on. Hopping into an online death match situation where getting trolled by 13-year olds, or just people who are ?better certainly doesn?t seem like a way to do that. No, when I am in one of these moods I like to stick to either co-op or single player games. This really allows you to let loose, you know what I am talking about; or maybe you don?t. At any rate, someone gets it; and with that I would like to share my favorite titles to get out some of that extra aggression on days where the world just hands you a shit sandwich and expects you to eat it without any bacon.
These are not in any particular order, because organization is for chumps and people who have OCD. I went with fives games, because I like the number five.
?????????????????????????????????????????-
Dynasty Warriors: Yes, seriously. These games aren?t exactly swimming in brilliant storytelling, character development, or voice acting or much of anything. If there is one thing that DW is great at it?s throwing a bunch of ?red shirts? at you with the idea that you will kill as many of those poorly trained bastards as possible. It is a mindless, button-mashing, rage-fest that tallies up every poor ignorant farmhand you smash with a hammer, axe, staff, sword, or weird bladed ring-thingies. Which brings me to my next point? Kill Counters. A game that has a kill counter delivers instant satisfaction. Not sure you?re going to succeed in your mission at hand? Fuck it, look how many dudes you just killed! If you fail, that means you just get to kill those losers all over again. Even if you lose, you still win! Unless you?re fighting Lu Bu, avoid this scurvy son of a bitch at all costs, or at least until you?re confident you?ve leveled enough, then level some more! You don?t just want to beat him, you want to send him and his stupid-fast horse flying over that Great Wall! (actually, keep the horse. It?s like lightning.)
Left 4 Dead 2: Why? because it?s got all the maps from the first game and melee weapons! There is nothing more satisfying than taking a fire axe or katana and just hacking the ever-loving shit out of the undead.?Sure, you could go into vs. Mode, but that would just piss you off more, wouldn?t it? You want co-op, this way there is no rush. You and your team can just wait for zombies to spawn and kill them all until you feel better or your team gets pissed at you for wasting time. This is a game that needs to be played online, since the bots in L4D2 make the player want to punch babies, yes? Punch babies! Don?t act like there aren?t some infants out there that don?t deserve it either, those stuck-up, new born, diaper wearing, nipple sucking ninnies. I digress, there are very few things more satisfying than massacring a horde of zombies trying to eat you and your buddies faces.
Supreme Commander 2: or SC2 for short, (eat it Starcraft 2, we were here first!) Now this is a great choice. With a plethora of upgrades and abilities you unlock faster by destroying your enemies it really promotes robot-on-robot violence. The game is great just to get together with a friend or to just lone-wolf some skirmishes. SC2 also doesn?t mess around with silly things like micromanagement, no you just build massive groups of all sorts of fighting robots and send them at your enemy?s structures. You don?t need to really control them, because who the hell needs to tell a killer-robot to use their big guns??No one, that?s who. It?s a fuckin? killer robot! When you destroy the enemy commander you?re also treated to a very nice and stimulating thermonuclear explosion. While the game may not be over, unless your opponent is really good at comebacks you?ve all but won. Now, just kick back and torture your slowly dying opponent while they desperately try to hold on for dear life. Hell, you can even make it interesting and let them rebuild, make them think they?ve got a fighting chance. It?s not cruel, they are in fact only robots.
Super Smash Brothers: Any will do, really. The entire franchise is kickass-tastic, however for the sake of keeping it currently, let?s go with Brawl. ?I mean, what other game really lets you get together with a few friends and just beat the hell out of one another and actually enjoy the stomping??None, Brawl makes it fun to lose, and no other game lets you trounce the shit out of your favorite cartoon and game characters with reckless abandon.?As a man who never really enjoyed the Pokemon series, kicking Pikachu of the side of a building is really satisfying, that little electric rat can fall for eternity for all I care. How about flying a guided rocket fired by Solid Snake right up the ass of Captain Falcon? Falcon-Punch that, dick. It?s also great to play alone, just crank the difficulty and see what happens, sure you could lose but you?ll have a fun time doing it. From there just watch your stress and worries melt away while you dish out the pain with your favorite childhood characters. You really can?t go wrong with Brawl.
Tetris Attack: Because ?Attack? is in the name and it?s my list! Sure, it?s a puzzle game, no shooting, no blood or violence, hell even the avatars you have to choose from are cute, chubby dolts that stand there and act like they are doing something important with a dopey and toothy grin on their otherwise stupid faces. There is however very few things in life that are as satisfying as building up a few layers of blocks only to dump them all on your opponent. Saving your own skin, while totally screwing over the person you?re playing against. Seriously, the hell with them; you?re having a bad day and winning is what matters here, even if you?ve got to bury their corpse one block at a time. This is a double-edged sword though, it is really easy to become the person getting blocks shoved down your throat at an incredibly inconvenient and quick rate. So, if you choose this game, pick someone you are pretty sure you can win against, like your 5-year old cousin or that dude who lives a few doors down from you with no thumbs. Either way, when you win there is a good chance your opponent will cry, but who cares? Not you, you?re a fucking winner!
Bonus Round: I know I said there was going to be five, but now there is six; because fuck the number five, that shit was so six minutes ago.
Saints Row The Third: You may be thinking ?Why not GTA?? That?s because GTA doesn?t go damn near far enough for those prone to fits of chaotic and ridiculous rage. Not to mention SR3 is full of angry, aggressive assholes that deserve nothing more than having cars rammed down their pixelated pie-holes. This game really lets you paint a mosaic of pain and suffering with the streets of Steelport as your canvas and the unsuspecting citizens of the city your medium. You can dish out a healthy portion of death in just about every color of the rainbow in this game. You may feel like going the high-tech route, using a VTOL to fly around the city; blowing up every vehicle in your path. Or maybe the more barbaric approach of dropping painful wrestling moves on some poor sap unlucky enough to have spawned next to you. Now, my personal favorite has a bit more flair and is satisfying as all hell. These four little words can bring a smile to just about anyone?s face ?Giant purple dildo bat.? Yup, I challenge you to beat someone to death with this weapon without a smile on your face. It can?t be done, it defies all logic and reason; just like the rest of the game. In a microcosm the giant purple dildo bat accurately describes this game and really shows us the lighter and more carefree side of sexual assault in the fine city of Steelport.

Anything that doesn?t have a quick expiration date, can be stored, and is something used on a regular basis is good in bulk. Items bought in bulk are less expensive per pound, and can also help squeeze out a few more meals before the next grocery trip.
By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / July 19, 2012
EnlargeWhen you get into the routine of cooking at home, you?ll eventually find yourself falling back on certain staples. Some of them are things that go into almost everything you cook, like a dash of salt or some black pepper.

Others are simply key ingredients in a lot of the recipes that you actually make. These things vary a lot from person to person, but for us they tend to include pasta, dried beans, dried rice, tomato sauce, dried oregano, flour, and flash frozen vegetables of a lot of different varieties.
There are also other things that have multiple uses in the home beyond just cooking, like baking soda and vinegar, and there are household supplies such as toilet paper.
All of the things mentioned here are things that we buy in bulk. Anything that doesn?t have a quick expiration date, can be easily stored, and is something that we use on a regular basis is a target for bulk buying.
Not only are items bought in bulk less expensive per pound, but they also shorten your grocery list and can help you squeeze out a few more meals at home before you have to return to the store. That saves on the travel cost and time of shopping, as well.
I?ll use a real example from our own pantry. We use extra long grain rice in a lot of the dishes we prepare, as my wife and I love curry and stir fry. Dried rice can easily be stored in the home, so when we get a chance we stock up on rice in abundance.
At our local grocery store, we can buy very similar rice in a two pound container for $3.99 or a ten pound container for $10.99. Obviously, the ten pound container is cheaper, as you?re getting near a dollar a pound. Sometimes, we?ll see sales that drop the price even lower, but those are irregular and hard to plan around.
For comparison?s sake, at our local warehouse club, we can buy a fifty pound bag of long grain rice for $17.67. That?s about 38 cents a pound.
Now, assuming we can get through even half of that rice over a reasonable period of time, we?ll save money buying in bulk. If we can get through that entire bag, we?re saving a lot of money.
The same phenomenon holds true for almost every item I mentioned at the start of this post. A large bag of frozen vegetables is less expensive per pound than a small one. A large sack of flour is far cheaper per pound than a small one. A case of tomato sauce is less expensive per jar than a single jar.
We even buy baking soda in bulk. You can buy a 13.5 pound bag of baking soda for $6.68 in our local warehouse club. Put some in a plastic cup in the back of your refrigerator and use it as needed and you?ll do fine. Compare that to a typical price for an eight ounce box in the store, which is usually in the ballpark of $0.89. Buying that much baking soda per box would add up to about $25.
The key to saving money this way is sticking to stuff that you?re sure you?ll use before it expires. If you don?t know that you?ll use up that much rice or if you don?t think you?ll use the baking soda before the expiration date, don?t buy it. Focus on things you use all the time so that you?re sure you?ll use it.
You?ll also want to be sure you have adequate storage space for the stuff. We store a lot of the non-food items in our garage when we?re not using them, plus we have a pretty large pantry. At our previous residence, we didn?t have much storage space at all, so we couldn?t really take advantage of bulk buying. If you can?t store it, it?s going to be wasted.
If you can handle those caveats with ease, buying key items in bulk can really cut back on your food and household budget. It?s one of those things that, once you?re in the routine of it, you can?t believe you ever got by without it.

Premium Cable stalwart Showtime is moving into new territory this month with the premiere of a new reality TV series that will take a serious look at the practice of polyamory. It marks the first time that the practice of consensual non-monogamy will get this kind of treatment from a major media outlet.
The new SHOWTIME docu-series, POLYAMORY: MARRIED AND DATING, exploring alternative relationship structures, premieres on Thursday, July 12th at 11 PM ET/PT. Polyamory or ?poly? as it is often referred to, is practiced by couples who believe that they can also have deep, committed, long-term and loving relationships with people other than their spouses. Unlike polygamy, polyamory is not based on any religious tenets nor does it involve multiple spouses. Produced by BermanBraun, this series of seven episodes presents the various ways in which poly practitioners approach non-monogamy. |
That?s not to ignore the impact of the docu-series Sister Wives or the HBO series Big Love, but those shows were not really about polyamory as much as they were about polygamy. As the news release correctly states, there is a distinct difference between those experiences, but the media has been quite blase about it, typically aiming at the sensational instead of the educational.
That?s not to say that this series will be any different. We?re going to withhold judgment until we see it, but the storylines they describe in the release could really go in either direction:
POLYAMORY: MARRIED AND DATING features Lindsey and Anthony, Los Angeles-based grad students who have been married for four years. In the premiere episode, the duo is reconnecting with their primary girlfriend of the past two years, Vanessa, who desperately wants a formalized commitment from her polyamorous triad. Further down the coast in San Diego, Kamala Devi and Michael have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of a four-year-old son. The couple currently identifies 12 other lovers ? some they share and some they don?t. Devoted to expanding their family, they are inviting two of their lovers, married couple Jen and Tahl, to move in with them. |
The first synopsis refers to a relatively common poly format, the closed triad. This is when a couple engages a single bisexual female in a relationship with both partners. In the poly lifestyle, the act of looking for such a partner is called ?unicorn hunting,? because single bisexual women who are interested in such relationship are so rare, they are practically thought to be mythical in nature. Okay. No, not really. But they are rare.
The second synopsis that describes a couple with 12 lovers stretches reality for us, if, for any other reason, there are only 24 hours in a day. How much of a meaningful relationship can all these people truly have? Do they work? Do they eat? Do they bathe? Because if they actually took the time to properly tend to each of those relationships, we?re reasonably certain they wouldn?t have any time left to do anything else.
Also, we can see some poly folks being upset about the depiction of the second couple, because the first thing many poly couples will proclaim is that poly is not about sex ? it?s about relationships. With Kamala Devi and Michael ? 12 lovers? Really? ? that they may be more about the sex than anything else. Although, we would like to meet their physical trainer.
But we could be wrong about all of it. We?ll wait for the series to play out before we make a final comment on it. However, in celebration of alternative concepts like polyamory getting somewhat of a serious look by the media, we are going to feature two more blogs over the next couple of weeks to deliver some straight talk about the alternative lifestyle known as polyamory. Tune in next week ? to Showtime and to our blog.

Midweek July Fourth causes muddle for travelers
NEW YORK (AP) -- This year July Fourth is on a Wednesday, and that has created a dilemma for some folks -- how long to go away, if at all. Anthony Del Gaudio, who's vice president of hotel sales for Loews Hotels, says he isn't seeing the normal July Fourth spike in bookings. ...

Dozens of wildfires are raging around the western United States, and the large-scale burns are sending smoke as far east as Greenland, according to some atmospheric models.
In all, about 60 wildfires are burning around the nation, from Alaska to Utah to Florida, and satellite images show hazy curtains of smoke hanging over huge portions of the eastern two-thirds of the country.
Smoke travels well, said Georg Grell, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Earth System Research Lab in Boulder, Colo.
More science news from msnbc.com
Researchers are using touchscreens to add a new dimension to the already-formidable communication skills of bonobos, a chimplike primate species.
The hotter the fire, the higher its smoke can go ? and the higher the smoke goes into the atmosphere, the farther it typically travels, Grell told OurAmazingPlanet.
"The winds are much stronger up there, so it gets transported much quicker," he said. In addition, once smoke gets to certain altitudes, it's less likely to be washed out of the air by rainstorms, Grell said.
Smoke from extremely hot wildfires can rise 4 to 5 miles (7 to 8 kilometers) into the atmosphere, and can even trigger massive thunderstorms, but it's likely that the smoke from the recent spate of fires is hanging out about 1 mile (1.5 km) above the ground.
Smoky trails
An animation produced by the weather-forecasting branch of NOAA shows plumes of smoke drifting up over the Great Lakes states and reaching areas of the East Coast by June 29. [ Watch the smoke animation ]
Grell said that 10-day models from his own branch, which deals only in research, show the smoke reaching the Eastern Seaboard, out over the Atlantic, and drifting up toward the southern tip of Greenland. However, he said, although it is certain that wildfire smoke would certainly be in the mix, a certain proportion of the drifting haze would be pollution produced by the city centers along the East Coast.
"There is definitely still going to be some smoke effect in there ? how much of it, I can't really say," he said.
Smoke does play a role in the weather ? it can reflect sunlight, cooling some regions, and plays a role in cloud formation, Grell said.
Smoke danger?
Although the maps may look dire, those who live in the smoke's path aren't likely to feel any ill effects if they're far enough away from the wildfires, according to asthma expert Mitchell Grayson in Milwaukee, one of the areas beneath a smoky plume in the models.
"Even though it could be covering a large area, if (the smoke) is in the upper atmosphere, it's not going to be a problem, because it's not the air we're breathing," said Grayson, an associate professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
"When you can smell it, that's when you're going to have problems," he said.
