GOP lawmaker calls Hispanic workers ?wetbacks?

During a discussion about ongoing challenges to the economy Thursday, Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young referred to Hispanic workers as "wetbacks," an ethnic slur used to describe migrant workers.

?My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,? Young told Alaska public radio station KRBD. ?It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It?s all done by machine.?

The term "wetback" is a pejorative term that has been used to describe workers from Latin American countries who swim across the Rio Grande to reach the United States.

Young's comments come just weeks after the Republican National Committee called for candidates and lawmakers to soften their tone when discussing Hispanic Americans and immigrants in an effort to engage Latino voters after getting only 30 percent of their vote in the 2012 presidential election. Republicans are currently working with Democrats in Congress to shape a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's immigration system, and comments like Young's could serve as a distraction from those bipartisan efforts.

In a statement to the Anchorage Daily News, Young said he meant "no disrespect" when he used the term.

"I used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in Central California," Young said in the statement. "I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays and I meant no disrespect."

House Speaker John Boehner condemned Young's comments Friday morning and demanded that he apologize.

"Congressman Young?s remarks were offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds," Boehner said in a written statement. "I don?t care why he said it ? there?s no excuse and it warrants an immediate apology.?

The Sony 32R400A is an LED-backlit 720p set that doesn't try to be anything other than a simple 32-inch HDTV. It doesn't have Web apps, it doesn't have 3D, and it doesn't have any other functions that make it useable without plugging in a cable, antenna, or Blu-ray player. Still, this $399.99 (direct) HDTV is worth considering if you're looking for a smaller screen for a guest bedroom, office, or kitchen, and are on a strict budget. Even so, you won't get as good picture quality as with our Editors' Choice budget set, the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ.?

Design
Very plain looking, visually, the 32R400A is little more than a 32-inch monitor with HDMI ports. Its bezel is flat and black, only punctuated by a Sony logo and a power light. Its 3-inch-thick frame is a bit chunky compared with larger budget HDTVs like the Westinghouse UW40T2BW, despite its LED backlighting. It sits on a rectangular plastic base that keeps the screen relatively low and very stable, but doesn't allow any pivoting adjustment.

A few basic control buttons are tucked behind the right edge of the screen, while an MHL-equipped HDMI port and a USB port sit opposite behind the left side of the screen. An additional HDMI port, along with component and composite hybrid video inputs, a 3.5mm audio output, a digital audio output, and a coaxial connector for cable or antenna can be found on the back of the screen. They're slightly awkwardly placed if you want to mount the set on a wall.

The 6.2-inch remote is small, flat, and simple. The buttons aren't backlit, and are clustered together fairly closely, so entering numbers blindly takes some practice. On the other hand, the direction pad and Volume and Channel buttons are large and distinct enough to find easily with your thumb.

Performance
We evaluate HDTVs using a Klein K10-A Colorimeter, DisplayMate test patterns, and SpectraCal's CalMAN 5 diagnostic software. According to our tests, the 32R400A produces a respectable picture, albeit one that doesn't excel at brightness, black level, or color. After basic calibration with power saving features disabled, the 32R400A produced a peak brightness of 192.83 cd/m2 and a black level of 0.1 cd/m2 for an underwhelming contrast ratio of 1,923:1. As far as color accuracy, greens lean more towards blue than they should, and reds appear darker than ideal, as the CIE color comparison chart below shows. (The boxes represent the ideal values for the colors, while the dots indicate the measured values.) To compare, the $360, 40-inch TCL LE40FHDE3000 boasts a higher contrast ratio and black level of 4,821:1 and 0.06 cd/m2 respectively, and the Toshiba 32L2200U puts out a peak brightness of 303.81 cd/m2, but has a black level of 0.14 cd/m2. Color skewing is worse on the TCL set, however.

This is only a 720p screen, so you're not getting full 1080p HD resolution, but for its small size that's not a major flaw. Washed out shadow and highlight details and muddled greens are the biggest problems from which the 32R400A suffers. Black Swan on Blu-ray looked a bit faded and cloudy, with the deep and textured darks not showing clearly on the screen. In Piranha on Blu-ray, the very sunny party scenes looked blown out, and the greens of plants and blue-green of the water looked undersaturated. Nothing is skewed horribly to the point of yellow or green skin, but they colors don't have any sense of "pop," and the mediocre contrast ratio makes both shadows and highlights feel flat. Viewing angles are excellent, though, with the picture becoming only slightly pale when viewed from the far sides, matching Sony's claim of an 178-degree range.

As a 32-inch LED-backlit screen, the 32R400A is a modest energy user. It consumes 38 watts under normal use with power saving features turned off, and 33 watts with power saving set to low. Higher power saving features made the screen too dark to watch comfortably. The same-size Toshiba 32L2200U hits the middle ground between the two settings by consuming 35 watts, and the larger TCL 40-inch LE40FHDE3000 uses 50 watts.

The Sony 32R400A is a capable low-priced set that comes with the same flaws you get with many other budget TVs: a lack of features and middling picture quality. The colors, despite looking undersaturated, are relatively accurate compared with some other budget models. However, you can get an overall better (and larger) picture for less with the $360 40-inch TCL LE40FHDE3000. And the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ serves up superior picture quality for the price, so it's our Editors' Choice for under-$500 HDTVs.

Her 'Crazy Obsession' leads to 10,000 celeb pics

Some people will stop at nothing in their quest to become famous. For Vanessa Sky Ellis, however, the goal isn?t necessarily to become famous herself but rather just be near famous people.

In the season two premiere of TLC's 'My Crazy Obsession,' Ellis discusses her fascination with meeting and taking pictures with celebrities. The Brooklyn native spends about eight hours a day "celebrity-spotting" and estimates that she?s collected over 10,000 pictures with celebrities, counting everyone from Angelina Jolie to Rev. Al Sharpton as her conquests.

"I?ll go after whoever, whenever," Ellis said. "Celebrity-spotting is most important to me. It's more important than having a boyfriend, going to work, then doing anything."

Between stalking famous people in New York City during the day and her late-night gig as a bartender, Ellis doesn?t have much free time, and claims to only sleep about two hours a night.

"Me getting another photo with somebody, that?s me achieving," she explained. "That makes me feel good."

In some cases, Ellis? obsession with famous people has made her somewhat famous in her own right. Her fixation on 'Jersey Shore' star Paul "Pauly D" Delvecchio garnered her some camera time during the show?s final two seasons. Ellis would frequently show up at the Shore Store to watch Delvecchio as he worked, and reportedly even tried to sneak into the show?s season 6 premiere party in New York last October. On her Twitter account, Ellis proudly calls herself "Jersey Shore's Real Pauly D stalker."

In addition to Ellis? tales of celebrity hunting, the premiere episode also features a segment with a woman named Chantal that eats and sleeps with her 19 pet rats. Her obsession has caused her marriage to fail, but Chantal refuses to stop buying rats. Other obsessions featured on the episode include a man who wants to be a merman and a woman who can't stop collecting Raggedy Ann dolls.

The show?s second season premieres Wednesday, April 3, at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.

Dear Perturbed,

Your concern isn't unfounded, and while these exploits don't give an attacker full access to your phone, other tricks can. Here's what you need to know about keeping your phone secure.

What These Exploits Actually Do

Let's start with the iPhone: Both of the recent iOS 6 passcode exploits allowed an attacker to glitch their way only into the Phone app, not the home screen. As such, they could place calls, see/edit your contacts and access your photos via the "assign new picture" option. So while it doesn't give someone total access to your phone, it's still enough to be concerned about.

The exploits affecting Samsung Galaxy phones worked a bit differently, flashing the home screen (or whatever was open before the phone locked) for no more than a second. While it doesn't seem all that nefarious, it's enough time to launch an app, and persistent attackers could use it repeatedly to download an app that would unlock your phone completely.

How Secure Is the Passcode on My Phone?

Both manufacturers are aware of these problems?Apple recently released iOS 6.1.3 to address its passcode issue, only to have it circumvented yet again. Samsung has also stated it's intent to do the same, although at the time that this is being written the only existing fix is a third party one.

A Passcode Doesn't Completely Protect You

It may seem like your phone's security has suddenly been compromised with all these passcode exploits, but really, passcodes have never been foolproof. In fact, they're no more secure than any other password or PIN: they can be cracked, and they really shouldn't be the only thing protecting your smartphone's data.

I reached out to security expert Brandon Gregg about the level of security a passcode affords. Here's what he had to say:

Passcodes do not mean encryption. Only if you specifically go to your Android settings can you encrypt your phone (and SD card) with a separate, strong password. Too many people believe their four digit Android or iOS passcodes protect their private information. First off, anyone can easily brute force your short 10,000 possibility password. Tools like XRY (which I use and was profiled on Gizmodo) can do the crack in milliseconds. Second, a passcode does not protect from direct forensic access by tools like XRY, MPE by Accessdata and the growing list of programs for Law Enforcement. Once inside the phone, all your data is up for grabs. The best thing you can do right now is full encryption. The above tools aren't designed for brute force at that level (yet) and the data will be useless.

Basically, your data is vulnerable on two levels. First, you have a lock screen passcode, which can be cracked, although using a strong alphanumeric password can make brute-forcing your phone take much longer to crack. However, your data is still sitting there on your phone's hard drive, and an attacker with the proper forensic equipment and enough patience can still get at your data?unless you have full disk encryption.

Android has had full disk encryption since Honeycomb (3.0), albeit with some limitations. iOS also has a Data Protection API that apps can use to encrypt and protect your data, but it's up to app developers to incorporate it (and it doesn't work with apps that use iCloud), so its a lot less useful. In both cases, however, the encryption key is the same as your passcode lock, and you'd have to use a strong passcode for the encryption to be effective. But who wants to enter in a long, alphanumeric password every time they need their phone? The point is to make it hard for hackers to get into your phone, not you.

Should I Even Bother with a Passcode Lock?

Of course. There's no reason for you to make things easy for the thief who steals your phone. You could also be very fortunate and end up being robbed by someone who doesn't know the first thing about getting around lock screens. By all means, enable your passcode, and make sure it's a good one.

However, understand that your lock screen alone isn't going to truly protect your data, and encryption is far from perfect. To that end, we recommend setting up a service like Apple's Find My iPhone, or a third-party app like Prey. They can track your smartphone and wipe its data when you lose it (or it gets stolen). Hopefully, you'll never need to worry about this sort of thing, but you know what an ounce of prevention is worth.

Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals have agreed to a new contract that guarantees the Cardinals' ace an additional $97.5 million over five years through 2018.

Wainwright had been eligible to become a free agent after the World Series.

The new agreement, first reported by foxsports.com, was confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because it had not yet been announced. The Cardinals scheduled a news conference for Thursday at their spring training camp in Jupiter, Fla.

A 31-year-old right-hander, Wainwright was 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last year after missing the Cardinals' World Series championship season in 2011 because of elbow surgery.

Wainwright was 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA in 2010 and was an NL All-Star.

Based on the type of your work, you have to decide how long you will rest and how frequent you need to take rest. Not only postponing works and relaxing is the way to enjoy a break but also some other forms of breaks are present for instance choosing a different mode of work. If you change your position from sitting to standing during phone conversation, it will definitely help you to make muscles relax.

To alter day to day tasks and work productively, embrace the following ways:

  • Make a planning for both work and play in such a way that you don?t need to perform the same task over a long period.
  • In order to do the same job, try to use diversified input devices. Suppose, you are doing a scrolling job, you can use both keyboard arrow key and the wheel of mouse.
