Aspen Historical Society needing to protect its ... - Aspen Daily News

From 10th Mountain Division equipment to Andy Mill?s Olympic uniform to Elizabeth Paepcke?s lavender shoes and gardening hat, the basement archive of the Aspen Historical Society is a treasure trove of local life.

On a recent tour, archivist Anna Scott showed off the scenes depicted in a recently acquired collection of 1,500 glass plate photograph negatives, capturing Aspen from 1900 to World War I. Poking through the archive, one might find the town fire chief?s helmet from the late 1800s, Hilder Anderson?s accordion, Albert Schweitzer?s piano, or all of the legal briefs from Whip Jones? legendary U.S. Supreme Court battle with the Aspen Skiing Co.

While this stuff is priceless, the price of properly protecting it is about $1 million.

The society is making a fundraising push to raise the money to do that, as the centerpiece of a larger $3 million capital campaign. The remaining $2 million would also give the society a general endowment, which is does not currently have.

The archive collection boasts more than 24,500 photographs, 6,500 objects, 5,900 written items and documents and 1,000 books. Longtime Aspen Times photographer Mary Hayes recently agreed to give the society her 65,000 photograph collection.

A professional analysis of the overflowing basement archive found it is undersized and outdated, with inadequate, precarious protection from fire and flood, falling below current museum archive standards.

Among the archival no-nos in the current set-up: a downstairs bathroom pumps waste up to ground level, moving it through a ceiling above the archive room; lights and plugs in the room serve as ignition sources and raise fire risk; there?s no cold storage for film and negatives, and no firewalls.

?We?re stuck in the ?70s down here,? Scott said.

The new design would add 35 percent to the storage capacity ? without adding to the building or basement?s footprint ? by moving the archivists? desks upstairs and otherwise rejiggering the downstairs. The work would also provide firewalls on all sides and remove any possible fire-starters.

?We want to protect our archives, because they are extraordinary,? society President Georgia Hanson said. ?The fact is that they are at risk and we want to reduce every occurrence of risk. ... Water is a huge fear. Fire is a huge fear.?

?Dorothy M. Atkins/Aspen Daily News

Aspen Historical Society?s President Georgia Hanson opens the late Hildur Anderson?s accordion, which is one of many items in the organization?s archive. Anderson, a member of the Aspen Hall of Fame, was a longtime local who was know for the many accordion lessons she gave to children in the area. Anderson died in 2002.

As is, staff members each have a ?red book? emergency binder. It carries instructions for what to do in case of an archive-threatening emergency, and has a list of what items firefighters should prioritize pulling out of the archive first.

After the renovation, Hanson said, the risk of catastrophic loss would be greatly reduced, and the archives would be brought up to the standards of the American Alliance of Museums.

The new plan was developed with the help of national archive expert Walter Crimm, who has worked for the Smithsonian Institute and History Colorado. Crimm provided his services in exchange for ski passes. The architectural design is by Steev Wilson of Forum Phi Architecture.

The $999,500 project would renovate the entire carriage house on the Historical Society?s West End grounds. Built in 1976, the three-story carriage house hosts five society employees as well as its rich archive collection.

Along with the archive renovation, and included in the $1 million price tag, the nonprofit is aiming to remodel the upper floors of the carriage house, which are currently over-run with piles of items from the archive. Without expanding the building?s footprint, the plans would revamp the upstairs offices and add a public research area, a meeting room, and include an energy efficient retrofit. The attic, currently used for overflow storage, would be renovated into office space for the society president and other staff. The conceptual plans show the interior crafted in Bauhaus style, in tribute to Herbert Bayer, with flourishes of ?Bayer blue.?

?We are not trying to get bigger,? Hanson said. ?We are trying to fulfill our responsibility to preserve these archives.?

The collection, noted Scott, is used by locals as well as researchers and people with local interest from around the world.

?We get used by people all over the world and the nation,? she said.

Hanson is hoping to complete the overhaul by the end of next year, which marks the society?s 50th anniversary and is also the time of her planned retirement. She wants to leave the archive safely protected, she said, and the organization with an endowment assuring its financial well-being.

A voter-approved property tax has helped support the society since 2006, levying about $2.38 for every $100,000 of property value. It brings in about $575,000 per year. Last year the tax funds accounted for 72 percent of the society?s operating budget. The rest comes from donations and program fees, according to the society?s budget.

How Speaking a Second Language Can Help Your Career ...

Career Second LanguageAs a young adult preparing to enter the professional world upon graduation, the ability to speak a second language is a great skill. From social media to participating in a globalized economy, interconnectedness is rapidly becoming one of the defining characteristics of the 21st century, and by speaking another language, you will be able to access and interact with more communities than you would as a monolingual speaker. To a potential employer, your ability to communicate with manufacturers in Asia or target Spanish-speaking demographics here in the United States is a valuable asset.

For certain majors and related career paths, bilingualism is a no-brainer. However, even if you aren?t a political science major specializing in Russia and the former Soviet Union, it?s very likely that a second language will still come in handy. In the United States, the need for Spanish speakers is quite strong in the communications and media industries.

WPP, one of the world?s largest advertising companies, has an agency dedicated solely to creating advertising campaigns tailored to Hispanic people. Fox launched MundoFox, a Spanish-language network, nationally this past August. As a communications major, solid Spanish-speaking skills can lead to opportunities with companies eager to expand their reach by developing products that appeal to Hispanic people.

Speaking another language can also be beneficial in the liberal arts, such as literature and art history. As a literature major, having a second major in another language can help you obtain a position at a publishing house as a translator, thus enabling you to enjoy work in a writer?s native tongue and challenging you to help communicate the author?s sentiments to an English-speaking audience.

For art history students, proficiency in a second language not only enhances your studies while conducting research into primary sources, it also gives you a leg up when applying for jobs at art magazines, galleries and museums. Language provides direct access to culture, so the ability to speak another language exposes you to otherwise inaccessible insights and fleshes out your understanding of a writer?s or an artist?s work.

Obviously, if you want to work as a translator at Random House or as a research associate in an international department at the Council of Foreign Relations, you should be proficient, if not fluent, in your second language. For other positions, conversational speaking skills are perfectly fine. For students, this means that while pursuing a double major in your main area of focus as well as a second language would be ideal (get your money?s worth).

If you can?t fit the extra courses and workload into your schedule, don?t worry! A minor can still help you sharpen your speaking, reading and writing skills. You can also look into the study-abroad programs offered in your major?s department and see if there are any programs in countries where you can further cultivate your language skills. Joining relevant language and culture groups on campus can also help you work on your speech outside of the classroom.

For companies that regularly deal with international clients, bilingualism is an extremely attractive trait in a candidate. They like having an employee on hand who can engage clients with relative ease. Bilingualism also appeals to companies interested in entering new markets, which is becoming increasingly common in this age of start-ups. Simply put, speaking a second language can help your resume stand out in a sea of qualified applicants.

Can Men And Women 'Just Be Friends?? You Tell Us! [VIDEO/POLL]

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

This one?s probably been debated since the arrival of Eve. Now a new study says what I?ve always believed. Do you agree? Take our one question poll, and tell us!

The new research says that how you answer question probably depends on your gender. Men seemed to believe that their opposite-sex ?friends? [you'll understand the quotes in a moment] were open to something more than friendship, and were frequently looking for a relationship upgrade.

Women. on the other hand, were much more comfortable with the idea of platonic relationships, and were more likely to respect a man?s on-going relationship with another woman as?well, ?taking him off the market.?

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan debated the topic in When Harry Met Sally?:
[petrudeau/YouTube]

What?s your take on the question? Have you had a successful platonic relationship? Or did the relationship fall apart because one person [probably the man. It's always our fault...] wanted to take things to the next step? Well, take a minute and answer our one question poll, please.

And if you feel the need to elaborate, please feel free, here or on our Facebook page.

The Business Blogger's Ultimate Guide to Mastering Lead Generation

The Business Blogger's Ultimate Guide to Mastering Lead Generation

.

cherry pieintermediate

Your blog is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful inbound marketing tools at your disposal. In fact, it's practically a marketing Swiss army knife: it enables you to regularly publish content, boost your website's search engine optimization, establish your industry thought leadership and expertise, and it also provides content fodder for your other marketing channels such as social media and email marketing.

But one of blogging's biggest benefits is in its huge potential for lead generation and reconversion. So if you're not taking advantage of all the lead generation opportunities your blog offers -- and then optimizing those opportunities -- you're likely missing out on a huge piece of your company's lead gen pie.

But have no fear! In this post, we'll walk you through all the various lead gen opportunities you can take advantage of on your blog, and even give you some great tips for optimizing those opportunities to make sure you're squeezing every last lead out of your business blog.

8 Lead Gen Opportunities for Your Business Blog

On Your Blog's Homepage

There are three main opportunities to generate leads from your blog's homepage -- using top and/or bottom banner call-to-action (CTAs), sidebar CTAs, or through links to landing pages in your top nav, sidebar, or footer. These options will be visible whether your readers are visiting the homepage of your blog (e.g. http://blog.hubspot.com) or checking out the permalink of an individual blog article (e.g. http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33734/20-Common-Social-Media-Marketing-Myths-BUSTED.aspx).

Because these types of CTAs will be shown to visitors no matter what article they're reading, it's very important to either feature offers that you know are successful among a broader audience of visitors, or offer a variety of offers that most visitors would find at least one or two appealing. Use your landing page analytics?to determine which of your top-performing offers have the best mass appeal and popularity, and feature CTAs for those offers on your blog's homepage.

Here's a closer look at how these types of CTAs might appear on your blog:

1) Top/Bottom Banner CTAs: These CTAs span the entire width of your blog's homepage, so design them with those wide dimensions in mind. For HubSpot's blog, we've found that banner CTAs that stand out from the rest of the page tend to perform the best. Choose bold background colors that pop out from the rest of your page. Select the offer for any top banner CTAs carefully, as these are the most prominent CTAs displayed on your blog's homepage.

?

2) Sidebar CTAs: These are smaller CTAs that appear in the sidebar of your blog's homepage. While they're a little bit more hidden than your banner CTAs and tend to generate a lower clickthrough rate, they can give your blog a little lead gen boost. Again, design these sidebar CTAs with their smaller width in mind.

?

?

3) Top Nav/Sidebar/Footer Links to Landing Pages: You can also leverage any links in your top navigation, sidebar, or your blog's footer to send direct blog traffic to landing pages. On HubSpot's blog, for example, we use the links in our top navigation to send visitors to targeted landing pages that provide top-performing offers for the main topics we cover on our blog.

Within Individual Articles

In addition to your blog's homepage, lead gen opportunities abound within the blog articles you publish themselves. In fact, these are some of the more effective ways to leverage your blog for lead generation, because you have the ability to better target readers based on the articles they're reading, which are the types of articles and topics that interest them.

For example, if you're a unicorn breeder who typically blogs about 3 main topics -- unicorn diet, unicorn grooming, and unicorn fitness/exercise -- your blog articles will probably fall under these three main categories. If a reader is reading an article specifically about unicorn diet, you have the opportunity to feature a CTA for an offer specifically geared toward that very topic. Remember: relevancy increases conversion rates!

Let's take a look at how these different types of lead gen opportunities might play out on a blog:

4) End-of-Post CTA Buttons: Your blog visitor just got finished reading your article about what not to feed your unicorn. What better time to promote your hit ebook,?Everything You Need to Know About Healthy Unicorn Diets? The beauty of end-of-post CTA buttons is that they help you leverage the reader's interest in that very topic -- or a related one. Be sure to choose a CTA for the most relevant offer pertaining to the specific topic you're blogging about for the best success with end-of-post CTA buttons. In terms of design, optimize these buttons for the width of your blog articles.

At HubSpot, again, we've found that bolder end-of-post CTA buttons that stand out from the rest of the content tend to perform best, but you should experiment with different designs to see what works best for you and your readers.

?

?

5) Top/Mid-Post CTA Buttons: Besides end-of-post CTAs, you can also experiment with other placement of in-post CTAs if you want to take a more "in your face" approach. The key is to try to do this as unobtrusively as possible. Don't go overboard -- be subtle, and make sure the offers you're promoting here are educational-focused so you're helping, not annoying, your readers.

?

?

6) Anchor Text Links to Landing Pages: Not every lead gen opportunity on your blog has to be achieved through button-based CTAs. Anchor text links to landing pages can be a great way to sprinkle a little lead gen fairy dust into the actual copy of your blog post -- and at the same time, help you to optimize your landing pages for search! Link some of the keywords to relevant landing pages, as you can see in the first example below, which links to the landing page for our ebook on dynamic content. You can even be a little bit more obvious about it using a text-based call-to-action to download the offer, as you can see in the second example below.

?

?

Off Your Blog

That's right! There are opportunities to generate and reconvert leads from your blog even if a visitor isn't physically hanging out there. Here are a couple of good ones to note:

7) In RSS Readers: Let's face it -- there is probably a good chunk of your blog readers who consume your blog content without actually visiting your website. People who subscribe to your blog via RSS may choose to add your blog's RSS feed to an RSS reader like Google Reader, eliminating the need to ever come back to your blog. Don't miss out on capturing these types of readers as leads! The good news is, if you're already optimizing your individual articles themselves for lead gen using in-post CTAs, your blog will automatically be lead gen optimized for folks' RSS readers since the full contents of the post will get pulled into those readers. Easy as pie! Furthermore, if you're a HubSpot user, you can even customize your blog settings to add an additional CTA to your RSS footer, which automatically displays at the end of every post in RSS.

?

hubspot in reader resized 600

?

8) In-Blog Subscriber Email Notifications: So what about all your email subscribers who read your new articles in full directly in their inboxes? Don't worry -- you can capture them as leads, too! And again, if you're already optimizing your individual articles for lead gen, there's no additional work needed on your part here either, since any CTAs or anchor text links will automatically get pulled into the email, too.

9 Ways to Optimize Your Blog's Lead Gen Potential

Okay, so let's say you're already taking advantage of all these various blog lead generation and reconversion opportunities. What can you do to give it a little boost? Optimize, that's what! Here are nine ways to improve you blog's lead gen potential once you have the basics in place.

1) Replace Old CTAs With CTAs for New Offers

Offers, no matter how evergreen they are, tend to get stale and decrease in effectiveness after a while. If you're using the same few CTAs over and over, there's no doubt about it -- your overall conversions on that offer will decline. Make it a regular practice of updating old CTAs with new CTAs for new offers to keep your audience converting. This of course means you'll need to be creating these new offers, too.

2) A/B Test CTA Designs

The design of your CTAs can also make or break whether visitors click. Experiment with various CTA designs to find out what resonates best with your audience. A/B test CTA button design elements like button color, language, imagery, tone, etc. to optimize for the most powerful CTA design. (Note: HubSpot customers can easily A/B test CTAs using HubSpot's CTA tools.)

3) Refresh Designs Regularly

Just as it's important to update the offers you're featuring in your blog CTAs, even A/B tested and optimized CTA design can also get stale when used over and over again since readers get used to designs and train their eyes to gloss over them. Regularly refresh your CTA designs to keep readers on their toes, whether that means hiring a designer, outsourcing design work to an agency, or experimenting on your own with something like PowerPoint or HubSpot's CTA builder.

4) Implement Smart CTAs

Most businesses will find that their blog tends to attract a lot of new traffic to their website. This makes sense, since articles commonly get indexed and found in search engines or shared through social networks. Because this is the case, it's safe to assume that very top-of-the-funnel offers like educational ebook and webinars would make great blog CTA fodder, since most of your new visitors probably know little about your business and are just starting to get to know you.

That being said, don't dismiss the fact that your blog also attracts repeat visitors (particularly if your content is top notch!). These repeat visitors may be a little bit more qualified (heck -- they may already even be leads), and it might make sense to show them different CTAs based on what you already know about them. Enter Smart CTAs, or dynamic CTAs that enable you to automatically display different CTAs based on information about a lead and better nurture them with content that appeals to their specific interests and needs. To learn more about how to leverage Smart CTAs, check out this comprehensive blog post guide.

?

blog smart cta example2 resized 600

5) Experiment With CTA Placement

Perhaps mid-post CTAs just end up annoying the heck out of your readers, or just never get clicked. What happens if you move up that sidebar CTA so it's above the fold on your blog's homepage? What if you had not one, but two sidebar CTAs? Experiment! You'll never know how your audience reacts if you don't try different things.

6) Optimize Landing Pages

Okay, so you've got some killer CTAs all throughout your blog, and people are totally clicking on them. Fantastic! So why the heck is your blog's visitor-to-lead conversion rate so darn low? If you notice that your blog's conversion rate is dismal, yet your CTAs clickthrough rate is stellar, then you likely have some landing page problems. Don't neglect to optimize your visitors' post-click experience. Spend some time diagnosing, analyzing, and optimizing your visitors' landing page experiences.?After all, if they don't ever fill out that landing page form, all your blog lead gen optimization work is all for naught. Furthermore, make sure your blog's CTAs are well aligned with the landing pages they're promoting. The quickest way to facilitate landing page abandonment is by promising on thing on a CTA and sending visitors to a landing page that promotes something different.

7) Increase Blog Traffic

Hitting a lead gen plateau? Another way to increase your blog's lead generation is not to focus on improving conversion, but rather to focus on generating more traffic. And if it's net new leads you're after, this means attracting new visitors. If you're attracting a lot of repeat visitors who have already converted, it's only natural that the new leads you generate from your blog will start to dwindle. Our new ebook, How to Grow & Scale Your Business Blog, offers some helpful tips for attracting brand new visitors to your blog. Some great tips include increasing the quality and reach of your blog content, seeking guest blogging opportunities, increasing the reach of your social media presence, and leveraging your evangelists.

8) Increase Blogging Frequency

Blogging frequency is an important part of the blog lead gen equation. In fact, according to the latest research compiled in our Marketing Benchmarks From 7,000 Businesses report, companies that increase blogging from 3-5x/month to just 6-8x/month almost double their leads. Furthermore, an average company will see a 45% growth in traffic when increasing total blog articles from 11-20 to 21-50 articles, and the average company with 100 or more total published blog articles is more likely to experience continued lead growth. Remember, the more articles you publish, the more reasons there'll be for visitors to come back and convert!

9) Convert Casual Blog Readers Into Dedicated Subscribers

Don't overlook the importance of convincing your casual blog readers to keep coming back to for more. Convert your readers into dedicated subscribers who become fans and evangelists of your content, and share your blog articles with their networks of potential new visitors. To learn about the various steps you can take to convert visitors into subscribers, check out this post.

Movie Review: The World According to a Lion of Fashion | FrontRow

Note: The release of this movie has been pushed back. It is now opening Oct. 19

Sometimes history offers up personalities that seem to float above the circumstances of their times, individuals that, by force of will or vision, do not live in history, they shape it.?Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel offers up Vreeland, a fashion editor, wit, and vivacious personality as this kind of character, a history-shaper, but also a woman who understood herself as playing that special role.

Writer and director Lisa Immordino Vreeland has a choice to make when approaching her subject, who is also her grandmother-in-law: do you tell a straight story of Vreeland?s life, or do you allow the documentary to take the shape of how Vreeland understood her own life, the ?faction,? as the Vreeland coins the term about mixing fact and fiction in the film? The filmmaker goes for ?faction,? which means taking at face value stories about Vreeland seeing Charles Lindbergh flying over her head on his famous flight to Paris, or the litany of personalities of La Belle ?poque that Vreeland imagines remembering filing through her parents? Parisian apartment when she was a little girl.

Perhaps none of this really happened, but?Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel makes the case that what is important is that Vreeland took these kinds of stretched truths and fantasies and built up her identity around them, allowing herself to live in a world more colorful, more possible, and more exciting than most of us will ever know. And it is the way that she lived that more than anything influenced her work at?Harpers Bazaar?and?Vogue, where she reinvented how the fashion industry saw itself. The documentary makes a strong case that Vreeland was a figure of historic importance, particularly to the fashion world. But that is not really the movie?s power. Rather,?Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel?plays like a call to arms, a crying carpe diem. Life is beautiful, darling. Go live it for real.

Cadillac ATS Delivers American Automotive Innovation

In January, The New York Times wondered aloud why Apple did not make the iPhone in America. The story heaped a torrent of commentary and scrutiny on Silicon Valley?s most valuable company. Whether you think manufacturing in the U.S. is right or not for Apple, Cadillac is proving that American-made technology can compete with the best.

The new Cadillac ATS was designed to be a luxury car world-beater - a tall order that required catching up to the likes of BMW?s 3-series and Mercedes? C-class. But the folks at General Motors took a unique approach to the job and the ATS definitely arrives at the head of its class.

What Cadillac did is often overlooked in Silicon Valley. To help design the Cadillac User Experience (CUE), the company assembled a team of designers, engineers and software developers to shadow drivers while observing them in their natural habitat.

This ?contextual design? technique required team members to accompany actual consumers, an eye-opening experience. The shadow team was able to identify several different driving styles, which were categorized under a pseudonym. One type of driver, dubbed ?Spencer,? always needed to check text messages immediately, while ??Emily? liked listening to music, whether on her phone, iPod or flash drive.

Cadillac spokesperson David Caldwell tells me, ?We took a hard look at what carmakers call 'infotainment.' Everyone?s doing that, that?s sort of par for the course. We took a bit of a riskier approach: Is there something we can do that says ?hey these guys are doing something different???

Enter A New GUI

What became clear quickly is that most drivers are distracted by a myriad of bells, beeps and whistles emitted by our digital lifestyle tools. So Cadillac engineers set out to develop a less invasive type of user interface, one that communicates via seat vibrations.

You might call it ?BUI,? but GM prefers the less colloquial Cadillac Safety Alert Seat. The Alert Seat is able to tell a driver whether an object is nearby on the left by triggering a pulse on the left side of the seat.

Cadillac also joins another innovative force in technology: the open source movement. The CUE system runs on a triple-core ARM 11 processor and uses a Linux platform so developers can help keep the architecture fresh with new extensions.

CUE powers both an?8-inch capacitive touch screen, reportedly the first non-resistive display in an automobile, and a second, 12.3-inch fully configurable instrument cluster mounted behind the steering wheel.

Another automotive engineering feat was the addition of haptic feedback. There?s a proximity sensor, which brightens the display when a driver?s hand approaches the system?s user interface and a touch screen that provides both pulse feedback and the ability to swipe and pinch.

The Cadillac CUE (Cadillac User Experience) presents an easy to use icon-based interface that provides haptic feedback. Cadillac obviously learned its lesson from the iPhone, which was introduced just before the CUE project launched internally at GM.

Living In America

That producing a product as complex as a car with its myriad of alloys and steel and hundreds of technology features is not a trivial procedure is underscored by this Esquire article, How to Build an American Car, which breathtakingly describes the production process.

So would Apple benefit from building the iPhone in America? There are two trends to consider here. First, it?s increasingly likely that volatility in the oil business will cause fuel prices to double in the not-too-distant future. That will make shipping even a high-value iPhone from China via FedEx a less attractive proposition.

Another is that increasingly the added value in any consumer product is software. And in this area, America still out-shines the rest of the world although domestic educational obstacles and the ascent of India may diminish that advantage.

Still though, I?m happy to see that once-considered-dead General Motors can not only match global competitors in engineering but also reinvent an area where automobiles will increasingly have to shine - the human-machine interface. Don?t believe me? I have just one word to say, iDrive.

Happy motoring America, and please contribute software innovations for the automobile and computer revolution to our Spigit innovation crowdsourcing engine.

Impact of autism may be different in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Men and women with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) may show subtle but significant differences in the cognitive functions impacted by the condition, according to new research published Oct 17 by Meng-Chuan Lai and colleagues from the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, UK in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

Though individuals with autism show sex-specific differences in serum biomarkers, genetics and brain anatomy, little is known about any sex-dependent differences in cognition caused by ASC. Following their previous report on behavioral sex differences in adults with ASC (also published in PLOS ONE, in this new study the researchers compared four aspects of cognition in adults with ASC to those with typical development. They found that perception of facial emotions was equally impaired across both sexes in individuals with ASC. In tasks involving attention to detail or dexterity requiring strategic thinking, women with ASC performed comparably to women without ASC, but men with ASC showed more difficulties than neurotypical men.

According to the authors, their results suggest that the severity with which certain cognitive functions are affected by autism may be dependent on sex, and has implications for assessment and intervention of ASC.

"What we know about males with ASC should not be assumed to generalize to females", said Dr. Lai. "Their similarities and differences need to be investigated systematically in autism research."

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government on Wednesday said the international envoy's call for a holiday cease-fire would likely fail because the rebels fighting to topple Bashar Assad's regime have no unified leadership to agree to it.

The envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, had asked Iranian officials to help broker a truce during the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, which falls later this month.

But Syria's state-run Al-Thawra newspaper, a government mouthpiece, said Wednesday that the biggest obstacle to the truce was the lack of an authority to sign for the rebels.

"There is the state, represented by the government and the army on one front, but who is on the other front?" the paper asked in an editorial.

All international efforts to end Syria's civil war to date have failed. Both rebels and government forces have disregarded previous cease-fires, and the scores of rebel units fighting to topple the regime have no unified leadership. Many don't communicate with each other.

Brahimi, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy, arrived in Beirut on Wednesday for talks with Lebanese officials on how to resolve the crisis. The visit is part of a regional tour.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi said in statement to the state news agency that the government was waiting for Brahimi to come to Damascus to convey to officials there the results of his tour. It would welcome any "constructive initiative," Makdessi said.

It was unclear if Brahimi would travel to Damascus from Beirut.

Activists say more than 33,000 have been killed in 19 months of violence in Syria.

3 Agriculture Stocks To Consider For Exposure To Stevia - Seeking ...

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Ag Alert, which is the weekly newspaper of the California Farm Bureau Federation, recently published an article on a number of different aspects of the Stevia industry and its growing importance in California.

Stevia is a member of the sunflower family. The plant is originally native to Paraguay and has been used as a natural sweetener in its raw unprocessed form for many years. The plant's leaves contain compounds that can be up to 400 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia has zero calories, and tests have shown that the principal sweetener, extract Reb A, has no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels. Japan has been using Stevia extracts for more than three decades, and both the FDA and the European Food Safety Agency have approved the use of Reb A.

Today, stevia is grown primarily in China, which has 50,000 acres under production, but many experts believe that California has the potential to become the stevia growing capital of the world. Food economists believe that the global stevia market could grow from about $1 billion to about $10 billion by 201 while also gaining market share in the global sweetener market, which is estimated at around $60 billion. The World Health Organization also believes that stevia could eventually account for 20% to 30% of all dietary sweeteners used. One of the companies that is featured in Ag Alert's article is Stevia First (STVF.OB).

In order to take full advantage of the coming explosion in stevia demand, Stevia First intends to create a "first of its kind" vertically integrated stevia business in North America. The company has placed itself in California's Central Valley, one of the most productive and innovative agricultural regions in the world. Stevia First intends to draw on the expertise of researchers and growers there. The company will utilize fermentation-based production as well as advanced plant breeding and harvesting techniques to control the quality of production from start to finish. In doing this, Stevia First will establish a huge source of affordable stevia products for customers. Research and development will focus on high-value objectives, including fermentation-based stevia production methods, which could reduce the need for stevia leaf production. The company also aims to develop advanced varieties of the stevia plant, whose leaves can provide safe, natural, zero-calorie extracts to be used as sweeteners.

As far as the product focus is concerned, Stevia First initially plans to produce stevia leaves and extracts for processors and refiners who will then further process the extract for use by consumers and beverage makers. The company has identified sources such as OEM suppliers and food technologists who will create their own branded product lines (tabletop sweeteners and nutritional enhancers). The best tasting steviol glycloside formula is Reb A, which can be 200 to 400 times sweeter than sugar. Reb A contains zero calories and does not elicit a glycemic response, which makes it safe for diabetics to use. It is also non-cariogenic, which means that teeth will not be damaged. It is heat and pH stable, and can be used in place of sugar in most instances.

Stevia First has taken concrete steps to implement its business plan by leasing 1,000 acres of land in California's Central Valley. The strategy of leasing rather than buying will help to control capital expenditure. Research and manufacturing facilities are also being developed. Stevia First is researching different methods of stevia production, including both farm-based stevia production and fermentation-based stevia production. The company expects to develop proprietary stevia plants over the next two or three years by which time it will be ready to commence commercial scale production. The company has signed an agreement to license intellectual property from Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, which is a leading Canadian-based company. The license includes compositions and methods for preparing steviol glycosides and steviol through fermentation based processes. A separate consulting contract will enable the two companies to work jointly on developing stevia.

The company's financials for the second quarter of 2012 show no revenue and a loss attributable to common stockholders of $430,000. Cash and cash equivalents as of June 30th, 2012 stood at $920,000, and equity stood at $370,000, after accounting for accrued losses. Net cash generation for the quarter stood at $360,000, after accounting for cash from financing activities of $890,000. However, these figures are typical for this kind of early stage company. Stevia First has an impressive business model, and it has made the right moves so far in implementing its business plan. Stevia First is currently trading around $0.55, between a 52-week range of $0.23 and $3.58. If you believe in the enormous market potential of stevia, you should consider investing in Stevia First today.

S&W Seed (SANW) was established in 1980 and is also headquartered in California's Central Valley. S&W Seed Company is an established producer of warm climate, high yield alfalfa seed varieties, including seeds that can flourish in poor, saline soils. The company's products have been established over years of university-sponsored trials. The company also offers seed cleaning and processing at its 40-acre facility in Five Points, California, and has recently launched a business expansion focused on mass producing stevia leaves in the U.S. This is in response to growing global demand for the natural zero calorie sweetener from the food and beverage industry.

For the fiscal year ended June 30th, 2012, S&W Seed reported an increase in revenues of 289% to $14.1 million, up from $3.6 million in 2011. Seed and crop revenues increased 398% to $13.3 million, compared to $2.7 million on a year-on-year basis. EBITDA was $868,000 for the year, an improvement of $2.1 million, compared to a loss in the previous year. Basic and diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.06, versus a loss of ($0.14) per share in 2011. A write down of $277,000, related to lower than anticipated yields on the company's non-core and non-recurring wheat and triticale crops, was included in the results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2012. This was primarily used for land reclamation to prepare for alfalfa seed production. Excluding the effect of this one-time loss, net income for fiscal year 2012 would have been $556,000, or EPS of $0.09 per basic and diluted share. Dedicated alfalfa seed acreage for the harvest in the fall of 2012 increased by 94% to over 4,600 acres, while dedicated stevia acreage expanded to more than 250 acres, compared to 114 acres in 2011.

S&W Seed successfully completed a $5.5 million public offering in May 2012 to generate funding in order to acquire additional farmland to expand alfalfa seed production. S&W Seed has also raised $3.5 million in a private placement transaction, in which it sold 600,000 shares of restricted common stock at $5.85 per share. Additionally, S&W Seed was able to achieve an increase in a line of credit with Wells Fargo to $7.5 million, which remains untapped, to help facilitate its growth plans. The company is currently in a comfortable financial position.

S&W Seed Company has commenced the commercial harvest of stevia in August 2012, and expects to complete at least one more harvest by the end of this year. This is the second year in which the company has produced stevia leaves from its 114 acre field in Chowchilla, California. After the harvest, the stevia leaf will be dried and prepared for shipment at the company's processing facility in Five Points, California. The company has recently planted a second generation field of approximately 150 additional acres, utilizing plant varieties that it believes may be superior to those of the first generation planting on the Chowchilla field.

In 2010, S&W Seed entered into a five-year agreement with PureCircle (PCRTF.PK) to sell the stevia that it grows for further processing and refining. PureCircle, which is based in Malaysia, is one of the world's leading producers of high purity stevia ingredients for the global food and beverage industry. As the driving force behind moving stevia from niche to mainstream global acceptance, S&W Seed is advancing sweeteners for manufacturers as well as consumers. S&W Seed has a substantial market share (90% by some estimates) in the supply of stevia to the U.S., excluding tabletop sweeteners. S&W Seed has demonstrated that it is possible to grow stevia successfully in the U.S. and California in particular, but it is clear that strong market demand for stevia will require large production capacity in the U.S.

Though S&W Seed generates revenues and has made a profit in the last fiscal year, there are several key points potential investors should keep in mind. Stevia cultivation has successfully commenced, but the company still has to establish itself as a reliable and consistent stevia producer. The company will probably require more acreage in order to be commercially viable. The company's acquisition of Imperial Valley Seeds for $6 million is somewhat troubling. This is a big risk for such a small company, and it is going to have a big job on its hands of digesting the acquisition and harnessing the synergies. Moreover, Imperial is a producer of alfalfa seeds, and brings nothing to the table when it comes to the stevia business. S&W Seed is currently trading around $7.91 per share, between a 52-week range of $3.95 and $8. I believe investors should watch S&W Seed closely as more information about the Imperial acquisition comes out.

Ingredion (INGR) is a new name for Corn Products International. The name was changed to better reflect the ingredients that the company supplies and the markets that it serves. In its sweetener range of products, Ingredion sells stevia-based sweeteners under the brand name Enliten, though this is not a major product for the company. Based in the Chicago suburb of Westchester, Illinois, Ingredion is a leading provider of ingredient solutions. The company turns raw materials like corn, tapioca and wheat into a number of ingredients catering to the food and beverages industry. The company's products also supply the brewing and pharmaceuticals industries. Ingredion has more than 10,000 employees serving customers in 60 different markets in 40 countries. The company's starches, sweeteners, texturants and nutritionals are used by its clients as sweeteners and adhesives.

Ingredion reported strong results for the second quarter of 2012. Second quarter diluted EPS grew by 39% to $1.40 per share, compared to $1.01 per share year-on-year. This included a $0.16 per share benefit from the release of a Korean deferred tax valuation allowance, which was partially offset by $0.08 of restructuring and impairment charges and $0.01 of business integration costs. The second quarter of 2011 had included $0.07 of integration costs and $0.02 of restructuring charges. When these items are excluded, adjusted EPS grew 21% from $1.10 in the same quarter of the previous year to $1.33 this quarter. The estimated factors driving the increase in 2012 adjusted EPS were $0.25 from margin improvements, $0.03 from higher volumes, and $0.03 of normal operating items partially offset by $0.08 from adverse currency translation.

Diluted EPS for the first six months fell by 12% to $2.61 per share, compared to $2.97 per share in the previous year. The first half of 2012 included a $0.16 per share benefit from the release of a Korean deferred tax valuation allowance that was substantially offset by $0.11 per share of restructuring and impairment charges and $0.03 of business integration costs. The first six months of 2011 had included a $0.75 gain per share from a NAFTA settlement with the Mexican government, partially offset by $0.13 of integration costs and $0.02 of restructuring charges. When these items are excluded, adjusted EPS increased by 9% from $2.37 per share to $2.59 per share in the first six months of 2012.

As of June 30th, 2012, total debt reached $1.84 billion and cash and cash equivalents were $440 million, respectively, compared to $1.95 billion and $401 million, respectively, as of December 31st, 2011. In the first six months of 2012, cash flow from operations amounted to $318 million, compared to $102 million in the same period of the previous year. Capital expenditures, net of disposals, were $128 million in the first six months of 2012, compared to $89 million for the first six months of 2011.

Fitch has reaffirmed its BBB rating on the company's debt, and upgraded the rating outlook from Stable to Positive. The rating agency attributes the upgrade to the company's progress in integrating the $1.4 billion acquisition of the National Starch business of Akzo Nobel N.V. (National Starch) as well as the earnings outperformance since the acquisition. The upgrade also reflects the larger size and the broader product portfolio as well as the fit and synergy between National Starch's expertise and leadership in specialty and modified starches for the processed foods industry and Ingredion's core competency in corn refining.

Ingredion maintains a competitive position in corn refining and starch-based ingredients, and has global operations as well as a well diversified customer base. It follows clear and conservative financial policies and is financially strong. The recent rise in corn prices due to the effects of the severe summer drought on the U.S. crop is bound to affect the company. It remains to be seen whether the higher costs can be passed on to customers. The uncertain global economic situation also raises questions about starch demand. Investors should watch these headwinds closely.

Coca-Cola's revenue misses Wall Street expectations

(Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co reported quarterly revenue that came in short of Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, hurt by declines in Europe and Asia where it sold more lower-priced drinks amid economic uncertainty the company expects to continue into 2013.

The world's biggest soft-drink maker, with brands such as Sprite, Fanta and Minute Maid, also said revenue and profit were hurt by the stronger U.S. dollar, which reduces the value of overseas sales.

Still, earnings were in line with analysts' expectations and Coca-Cola shares fell only 27 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $37.86 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Coca-Cola gets most of its sales from outside the United States, so shifts in currency can have a big effect. In the third quarter that ended on September 28, the strong dollar shaved 5 percentage points of growth from net revenue and 7 points from operating income.

Aside from currency, results in Asia, particularly China, disappointed some analysts, though Sanford Bernstein analyst Ali Dibadj said it was not surprising, given the softening of consumer sentiment and the slowing of an economy that had been a growth engine for multinational companies in recent years.

"China is slowing down a little bit for the long-term benefit of China. As China will settle, there's a little bit of adjustment," Chief Executive Officer Muhtar Kent told Reuters. "Take a plane -- when it leaves cruising altitude and is going to land, the ride gets rougher. But it will settle."

Kent said he expects settling into a lower growth rate will happen within the next few months.

Sales volume rose 3 percent in the Pacific region; JP Morgan analyst John Faucher expected 4.5 percent growth.

In addition, European consumers have been hurt by the debt crisis. In the latest quarter, consumers were buying bottled soft drinks to take home, which is less profitable for the company than drinks sold in restaurants.

"Go to Madrid and look at the cafes. There aren't a lot of people sitting around drinking Cokes or coffee or whatever," Gary Fayard, chief financial officer, said on a conference call.

Also, European sales are growing most Eastern and Central Europe where prices are lower, Kent said. This helps volume of sales but hurts revenue.

Third-quarter net income for Coca-Cola was $2.31 billion, or 50 cents per share, up from $2.22 billion, or 48 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, earnings were 51 cents per share, in line with analysts' average estimate, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 1 percent to $12.34 billion. Analysts were expecting $12.41 billion.

Worldwide sales volume rose 4 percent in the quarter, driven by gains in all regions. Volume rose 1 percent in Europe, 2 percent in North America, 5 percent in Latin America and 11 percent in the Eurasia and Africa region.

Sales volume in the Philippines was flat, due to typhoons. In Japan, soda volume fell 5 percent from the year-earlier period when new products boosted sales. Volume rose 2 percent in China.

Closer to home, North American revenue and profit rose, helped by a recent acquisition and the impact of certain commodities hedges.

Coke is also seeing tougher competition from PepsiCo Inc , which is working hard to improve its North American beverage business. It has increased marketing spending with a focus on core brands like Pepsi-Cola and analysts have been saying that the renewed effort is working.

Through Monday's close, Coke shares were up 9 percent year-to-date, while the Dow Jones U.S. Beverage Index <.djusbv> gained 10 percent and the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> rose 14.5 percent.

Excessive condensation from A/C set too low - Inspection News

Hey guys, got something I never ran into before and having a hard time trying to figure out how to verbilize, or explain the result. I've already had a list of questions from the buyer before the inspection, and he was not there so I know when he gets the report I will be asking to explain this in great detail. I already mentioned this to someone in idle conversation, and they could not understand this phenomenon, the more I tried to explain it, the more I started getting confused.

Anyway, this is South Florida, still hot mid 80s, and still humid. Got to this inspection at 1:00 PM, I noticed while walking around outside all the windows had condensation on them (inside). When the Realtor got there, we went inside, and I immediately noticed it was cold....It was 68 inside, thats cold here as far as keeping your house at that temp via A/C.

House is 2004, 4000 sq ft. 2 story, both air handlers on second floor in closet, in conditioned space. Both A/C units operating as intended. The condensation was only on the windows, the air handlers, and a few A/C grills, all smooth surfaces except the air handler room ceiling which was saturated.

I think it just came to me, I will put my new thought at the end.

The air handler closet had no return air flow (louvered doors), the returns were nearby, but now that I think about it there was no real air flow in the closet, it was not sealed, but the return air was pulled from elsewhere.

The part im struggling with, and have already been asked is......if the A/C is excessively running, the humidity should be lower, so why the condensation? I can understand the windows, single pane, with the outside heat load.

So, when the lightbulb just came on, my theory is that if some of the return air was being pulled through the air handler room, there would have been air movement, and the air handler would not have been sweating, thus the ceiling would not be soaked.

I have heard of something similar a few years ago. Brand new house, vacant, A/C guys came to start A/C, either wired T stat wrong or whatever, but the A/C never shut off. Weeks later a salesman went to show the house to someone, opened the door and about fell over. The whole house was covered in mold, drywall was so wet it was falling off the studs. I heard all the windows had consensation also. The ended up gutting the house and redoing it.

Any thoughts? Can having a house too cold via A/C be harmful to the house?
