Self defence instructors offering free classes | Local | News | The ...

A pair of Sarnia martial arts instructors are offering free self defence classes for women in the wake of recent events.

Teachers at Dynasty Martial Arts and the Sarnia Self Defence School are offering their respective courses over the next two months, following the murder of Noelle Paquette.

The 27-year-old teacher's body was found in a woodlot outside Sarnia Jan. 2. She was last seen alive after leaving a New Year's Eve party in downtown Sarnia around 2 a.m. Jan. 1.

?In light of that we really need to do something,? said Rob St. Jean, sensei at the Sarnia and Blenheim karate school.

The 38-year-old fourth-degree black belt in American kenpo karate is teaching classes Jan. 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Eastland plaza location in Sarnia.

?We will probably show them, within four lessons ? different types of grabs, attacks, chokes, holds, how to get out of them,? he said, noting he'll also talk about evaluating surroundings and identifying dangers.

The classes are full, he said, but there may be more scheduled with enough interest. To join a wait list, call 1-877-380-5425, email rob@dynastymartialarts.ca, or visit Dynasty's page on Facebook.

Meanwhile Jorge de Guzman, who's been teaching martial arts since 1976, is planning to offer a self defence course for women 14 and older Mondays and Wednesdays throughout February from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the local YMCA.

?I will be talking about prevention of abuse and dealing with the situation,? said de Guzman, 63, an akido and kung fu shihan ? master teacher.

He's also offering free self defence courses for elementary school children Mondays, Wednesdays (4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA gym) and Thursdays (5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Grace United Church's gym) for five weeks.

?We feel there's a need to run these classes for everyone after school since the school doesn't offer it in the school system,? he said.

Those looking to register can contact the YMCA, 519-336-9622. de Guzman is also available to answer questions at 519-542-0930.

The women's self defence course isn't accepting registrants yet, but people can call for more information, he said.

Both schools offer certificates to program graduates.
