COLUMBUS, Ohio A virus that infects most Americans but that usually remains dormant in the body might speed the progression of an aggressive form of brain cancer when particular genes are shut off in tumor cells, new research shows. The animal study by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC James) and at Dana Farber Cancer Institute suggests that cytomegalovirus (CMV) might significantly accelerate the development and progression of glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer.

The virus by itself does not cause cancer, the study suggests, but it might influence tumor development when changes occur that silence two genes called p53 and Nf1 in tumor cells. These genes are protective "tumor suppressor" genes that normally cause cells to die before they become malignant. But cancer-related changes can silence them, enabling malignant cells to survive, multiply and form tumors.

The findings are published in the journal Cancer Research. Some 50 to 80 percent of Americans become infected with CMV by age 40. The virus is transmitted by contact with infected saliva and other body fluids, and through sexual contact. Most people are infected early in life and then the virus remains dormant.

"CMV has been detected in many cancer types, suggesting that it might be reactivated when cancer occurs in the body," says co-corresponding author and researcher Dr. Chang-Hyuk Kwon, assistant professor of neurological surgery, at the OSUCCC James and at the Dardinger Center for Neuro-oncology and Neurosciences.

The researchers also learned that CMV stimulates tumor-cell proliferation by activating a biochemical cell pathway called STAT3. In healthy cells, STAT3 plays an important role in controlling cell proliferation.

"Our data indicate that CMV contributes to glioblastoma when already-mutated cancer cells proliferate using the STAT3 signaling pathway," Kwon says. "We believe that CMV's action occurs in the tumor's cells of origin early in tumor initiation."

The findings raise questions about how cancer is studied, says co-corresponding author Dr. E. Antonio Chiocca, chairman of neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and surgical director for the Center for Neuro-oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

"First, we usually study cancer in models that are virus-free, but our findings suggest that CMV might play a significant role in human cancers," he says.

"Secondly, anti-viral therapy against CMV might now be justified for human cancers, and immune responses to such cancer-modulating viruses should be carefully studied," Chiocca says.

About 18,500 new cases of glioblastoma multiforme are expected annually in the U.S., and 12,760 Americans are expected to die of the disease.

Kwon, Chiocca and their colleagues conducted the study using two mouse models infected with murine CMV (MCMV). One model developed glioblastoma spontaneously; the other received implants of human glioblastoma cells. Key technical findings include:

  • MCMV-infected mice with genetic mutations in p53 and NF1 in their brain cells that predisposed them to spontaneous glioblastoma had shorter survival than non-MCMV-infected mice with the same mutations;
  • Implanting human gliomas into the brains of MCMV-infected animals significantly shortened their survival compared with controls;
  • MCMV infection increased levels of activated STAT3 in neural stem cells, the cells in which glioblastoma is thought to originate;
  • Human CMV increased STAT3 activation and proliferation of patient-derived glioblastoma cells; a STAT3 inhibitor reversed this effect in cell and animal models.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State's cancer program as "exceptional," the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program's 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a "Top Hospital" as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S.News & World Report.

  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects most middle-aged Americans, and it is often associated with an aggressive form of brain cancer; whether it plays a role in the cancer is unknown;
  • This study indicates that, in mice, a mouse CMV can speed the tumor's growth when two protective genes called p53 and NF1 are mutated in neural stem cells of the brain.
  • The findings suggest that viruses might influence cancer progression, and that anti-viral therapy might improve the treatment of these aggressive brain tumors.

Oppo Ulike 2S coming soon with 55inch 720p display, improved 5MP front camera

Even though Oppo's Ulike 2 won't be leaving China any time soon (if ever), there's still hope for its larger follow-up, the Ulike 2S. Announced in Shenzhen yesterday, this new device still boasts a combo of a 5-megapixel front-facing camera plus an 8-megapixel imager on the back, but both are said to have improved performance and beautification effects. The more obvious difference is the larger 5.5-inch 720p display -- a big jump from the old 4.5-inch 960 x 540 version -- with a pretty slim bezel. On the back, the Ulike 2S has a cover that gives you access to the removable 3,000mAh battery (instead of the old built-in 2,020mAh cell), as well as the dual micro-SIM slots.

There's no word on the detailed specs or price just yet, but stay tuned for its launch within the next two months. Alternatively, there's always the smaller MeituKiss with its 8-megapixel selfie camera, if you dig the extra pixels.

LuAnn de Lesseps close to finalizing 'Real Housewives of New York' deal

By Jethro Nededog

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - LuAnn de Lesseps is returning to Bravo's "The Real Housewives of New York City" after all.

According to an individual with knowledge of the negotiations, de Lesseps is in the final stages of signing her contract to resume filming on Season 6.

But contrary to other reports, the individual told TheWrap that she isn't signing on for a lesser role on the season.

Bravo declined to comment on negotiations.

Earlier this month, de Lesseps and her castmates held the production hostage while it negotiated for higher salaries. Instead of giving in, Bravo gave them a deadline to sign their contracts or they'd be fired.

In the end, Bravo announced the show had been officially renewed and resumed production with only four housewives: Ramona Singer, Heather Thompson, Carole Radziwill and Sonja Morgan.

Late last week, Aviva Drescher closed her contract, which left de Lesseps as the last one still on the outs.

Like Singer, de Lesseps has starred on the series since it debuted in 2008.

Why Syria is (still) different for the West

The drumbeat for war, or 'intervention,' in Syria continues to build, but it's still a dangerous proposition.

By Dan Murphy,?Staff writer / May 29, 2013

This image from amateur video shows rebel fighters in Daraa, Syria, Tuesday. Europe's decision to allow member states to arm Syrian rebels and Russia's renewed pledge to send advanced missiles to the Syria regime could spur an arms race in an already brutal civil war and increasingly turn it into a East-West proxy fight.

The US position on Syria's civil war remains, in public at least, much as it has long been: The end of President Bashar al-Assad's rule via some sort of negotiated settlement between the rest of his regime and the patchwork of secular Syrians, mainstream Islamists, and jihadis fighting against him.

That's the premise for a conference the US, France, and Britain have been pushing for in Geneva next month. But recent battlefield gains for Mr. Assad's forces, a Russian promise of a delivery of advanced air defense systems to the government (which would make a US-led air campaign more dangerous), and a divided political leadership for the opposition all make it appear very unlikely that peace will break out next month in Switzerland.?

Put simply, the Syrian opposition has not come together in the way the US had hoped ? not in its military composition, which now involves a lot of foreign travelers from a regional Al Qaeda affiliate, nor on the international diplomatic front, which is fraught with infighting and doubt about the worth of a conference far from the battlefield.

Meanwhile, members of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah continue to pour into Syria to fight for Assad, with Iranian and Russian military support?for the regime lurking in the background.?

That's made the opposition in some ways almost as unattractive from a US perspective as Assad himself, and explains American reticence. But the fact remains that Assad has long been isolated and sanctioned by the US, and the civil war has claimed at least 80,000 lives so far, with cities like Homs and Aleppo reduced to rubble by the government's long-range shelling.?

Speaking today, Fred Hof, who resigned as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's special representative on Syria last September, said: "This is a war Iran and Hezbollah have decided not to lose... we have not seen the same level of commitment from US."

Hypocritical US?

But after decades of claims that US foreign policy is a "moral" one and calls for a US ready to end horrific wars after the genocide in Rwanda, some in Washington say the US looks hypocritical for not at least giving the rebels more advanced weapons and, perhaps, using air power to halt Assad's advances and give the rebels enough breathing room to regroup and win their war.

US Sen. John McCain, who darted across the Turkish border into rebel-held Syria on Monday, has been leading that charge. On a visit organized by the Syrian Emergency Task Force, a pro-rebellion group based in Washington, he met with Free Syrian Army leaders. He met with Gen. Salim Idris, a Free Syria Army leader, who according to the group "asked that the United States increase its aid to the Free Syrian Army in the form of heavy weapons, a no-fly zone, and airstrikes on Hezbollah."

Earlier this month Senator McCain said "the strategic and humanitarian costs of this conflict continue to be devastating" and called on the US to consider an "overt and large-scale operation to train and arm well-vetted Syrian opposition forces" and said that "we could use our precision strike capabilities to target Assad?s aircraft and SCUD missile launchers on the ground without our pilots having to fly into the teeth of Syria?s air defenses. Similar weapons could be used to selectively destroy artillery pieces and make Assad?s forces think twice about remaining at their posts. We could also use Patriot missile batteries outside of Syria to help protect safe zones inside of Syria from Assad's aerial bombing and missile attacks."

But is anyone in Washington listening? President Obama has been very cautious about getting more involved and today his administration poured water on a story in The Daily Beast yesterday that, citing "two administration officials,"?claimed that "The White House has asked the Pentagon to draw up plans for a no-fly zone inside Syria that would be enforced by the US and other countries, such as France and Great Britain."

USA Today quoted National Security Council Spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden this morning as saying: "I'm not going to discuss our internal deliberations, but we have said for many months that the administration is prepared for a variety of contingencies in Syria and all options are on the table."

That sounds about right. The Pentagon is always readying contingency plans in responses to conflict, particularly when it looks like US politicians might request action. It's safe to assume a variety of no-fly and no-drive zone plans have already been drawn up. Whether the US imposes any of them is a matter of politics, of course.

And as horrific as Syria is now for the people living through the war, the possibility of broadening the conflict,?already spilling?over into Lebanon?and?Iraq, to involve?Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, and Israel (they have conducted airstrikes against what they alleged were attempted Assad weapons transfers to Hezbollah)?would give any president pause. This is a far more dangerous situation than in Libya.

Where are the hawks?

But the push for war continues. In the Washington Post yesterday there was a curious news story about the dearth of "liberal hawks" who were bullish on the Iraq war speaking out in favor of armed US intervention in Syria ? curious because it gives so little time to liberal hawks who are skeptical of armed intervention in Syria. In the long, three-page piece you have to read until the middle of the third page to find a supporter of the Iraq war who opposes a US war in Syria (the columnist Fareed Zakaria) being quoted (it is also only on the third screen that an overall critic of liberal interventionism, Stephen Walt of Harvard, is quoted).

But amid the burst in outside engagement, one influential group seems noticeably silent. The liberal hawks, a cast of prominent left-leaning intellectuals, played high-profile roles in advocating for American military intervention on foreign soil ? whether for regime change or to prevent humanitarian disasters. They pressured President Bill Clinton to intervene in Bosnia, provided intellectual cover on the left for President George W. Bush?s war in Iraq and urged President Obama to engage in Libya. But even as the body count edges toward 100,000 in Syria and reports of apparent chemical-weapons use by Assad, liberal advocates for interceding have been rare, spooked perhaps by the traumatic experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan and the clear reluctance of a Democratic president to get mired in the Middle East. Call them Syria?s mourning doves.

This is certainly true. There are fewer members of the US political, academic and journalistic establishments that support an armed US effort in Syria than did in Iraq. And the poor outcome of that war, which led to a sectarian civil war that claimed over 150,000 lives, certainly plays in to many calculations. But it isn't just that people feel burned by Iraq. Many people view the situation in Syria today particularly dangerous, with the likelihood of nasty effects in neighbors Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Israel. And the sectarian element of the conflict can't be denied.

It is not inherently inconsistent to support intervention in Libya, a tiny and far more homogenous country that had no powers standing behind it, and still be leery of one in Syria, where Iran and Russia back Assad. It is the specifics of Syria that must be taken on in making the case for war there ? not potentially foolish appeals to consistency.?

Of windmills and donkeys

Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Doha Center made the case for the US to give up what he describes as a "quixotic" effort to mold a Syrian opposition to its liking, and accept the Syrian opposition as it actually is. Writing in The Atlantic, he says it's a folly to wait "for a more perfect Syrian opposition" and appears to call for more arms for the rebellion, notwithstanding that it's armed component is "effectively dominated by Salafis and Islamists."

The original sin of US policy was taking military intervention off the table and focusing instead on a "political settlement," as if the two were mutually exclusive. Instead, intervention and diplomacy should have proceeded in parallel. It was only a credible threat of military action that would have brought the regime, or at least elements of it, to the negotiating table. In Bosnia and Kosovo, the Serbian government gave up its ethnic cleansing campaign and agreed to Western terms only after NATO military intervention, not before...

It is a testament to the faith that the Syrian opposition?still places?in the United States that they are even willing to go to Geneva. They, and we, have been through this before, the cycle of hope, followed by disappointment and even betrayal. Despite all evidence to the contrary, they still hope that American policy might change and adapt, after yet another round of diplomacy fails, as it almost certainly will.

In a series of tweets this morning, Hamid expanded on what he'd like to see happen, while also saying "in some ways, it's already too late for Syria." (he thinks the US should have gotten seriously involved 18 months ago, before the presence of jihadis within the insurgency grew.) He wrote the US should provide advanced weapons to the Free Syrian Army (the US has worried that such weapons, particularly portable anti-aircraft systems, could end up in the hands of jihadis), announce a deadline for regime to step down and strikes against senior regime figures and a "no-drive zone" imposed by air power if it does not comply.?

Will Proposed Tough New Drunk Driving Laws Kill Restaurants? -

Drunk driving laws could be changing:?The National Transportation Safety Board?has recommended that states make it illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol content above .05. Right now the limit is .08.

Because opinions are so polarized on this issue, I?ve been hesitant to wade into this debate.?As my fianc? was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver in the 70?s, and I once had a job where I had to deal with the immediate results of accidents, I have strong feelings about the matter.

Over 100 countries already have blood alcohol limits of .05 or lower ? the USA is lagging behind in updating our laws. Here is a look at BAC limits world-wide:

Blood Alcohol Limits World Wide

Courtesy NTSB.gov

On the other hand, I can?t help but think about the impact such changes will have on the restaurant and bar industry. Not only would restaurants be affected, but the change would also trickle down to lower wages for restaurant staff ? remember that tips are based on the total bill, of which alcohol pays a large part, but also liquor suppliers, as they could potentially have lower sales.

From the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) -

Today, investigators cited research that showed that although impairment begins with the first drink, by 0.05 BAC, most drivers experience a decline in both cognitive and visual functions, which significantly increases the risk of a serious crash. Currently, over 100 countries on six continents have BAC limits set at 0.05 or lower. The NTSB has asked all 50 states to do the same.

The research shows that drivers with a 0.05 percent or higher blood alcohol content are at significantly greater risk of being involved in a fatal crash. One study found that crash risk was 38 percent greater at 0.05 than at 0 percent and that when a driver?s blood alcohol content reaches 0.07, crash risk is doubled.

According to alcohol impairment charts, both males and females who weigh 140 to 160 pounds are at .05 after just two drinks ? defined as 1.5 oz. of liquor (and most bars pour more than that), 12 oz. of beer or 5 .oz of table wine. True, the BAC goes down as you linger over dinner, but you would still run a significant risk of being over the limit.

You can?t help but think that many restaurant patrons are going to think twice before ordering a full bottle of wine, or even a couple of cocktails.

This potential change doesn?t even address the problem of drivers using electronic mobile devices, which many studies have shown equal or even exceed the risk of driving while intoxicated, though some states are raising the fines substantially? ? in Alaska, texting while driving could result in a $10,000 fine and a year in prison. Last I heard, a bill in the California legislature would raise penalties to $1,200 for the first infraction.

As you can tell, I have very mixed feelings on this proposal. A change in the BAC will clearly affect the income of many people, but has the potential of lowering needless deaths on our highways. I?m curious to know ? what do you think? Feel free to comment below.

Tim Cook claims Apple will open up more developer APIs and opportunities on iOS

iphone5Here?s a big one ? Tim Cook has just openly claimed at his AllThingsD interview tonight that Apple will give users more third party choice on upcoming iterations of iOS (iOS 7, anyone?) and will open up some previously closed API and lift some restrictions. Tim Cook?s exact words are as follows:

On the general topic of opening up APIs, I think you?ll see us open up more in the future, but not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience. So there?s always a fine line to walk there, or maybe not so fine.

?

We think the customer pays us to make choices on their behalf. I?ve see some of these settings screens, and I don?t think that?s what customers want. Do some want it? Yes. But you?ll see us open up more.

Apple has often been criticized for too tightly controlling what developers can and can?t do on iOS, and this should ease some fears that iOS would fall out of favor with developers in exchange for the open and more powerful Android. The extent of this openness is yet to be known, however, but I?d wager we?ll be hearing more at WWDC.

94% Stories We Tell

All Critics (53) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (50) | Rotten (3)

Sarah might have wrapped up this documentary after her parentage is revealed about 70 minutes in, yet it continues for another 50 as she ruminates over the tale,... her engrossing personal story gradually devolving into an exercise in self-regard.

Stories told again and again have a way of neatening things up. Stories have a way of ironing out the wrinkles. Polley lets the wrinkles remain.

Sarah Polley's documentary is a startling mixture of private memoir, public inquiry, and conjuring trick.

Polley was right to follow her instincts, though, in not attempting to tie everything up. She recognizes that family histories are necessarily contradictory, crazymaking, and essentially unfathomable.

What unfolds is a riveting drama that grows even more so as it plays out.

Don't be fooled by its deceptively simple title or the hesitant, unassuming way it begins. Writer-director Sarah Polley's "Stories We Tell" ends up an invigorating powerhouse of a personal documentary, adventurous and absolutely fascinating.

With Stories We Tell, actress-turned-director Sarah Polley has proven herself a consummate filmmaker, transforming an incredible personal story into a playful and profound investigation into the nature of storytelling itself.

Eventually, the formalistic strictures of the documentary fall away and Polley - her entire family, really - is left facing the reality of the past as the cameras roll.

Polley imaginatively fills in the past through a hybrid of documentary and fiction [for] knowing relevance to oral history, testimonial evidence, and what makes a family.

What I can say is that the movie is dramatically compelling, journalistically fascinating, cinematically profound, and intellectually challenging.

Sheds fascinating light on Polley's art.

Polley mines her own life to strip naked the essence of storytelling, and what it is about folklore that makes it so essential in shaping our perceptions about who we are and where we come from.

Stories We Tell starts out as a simple investigation into the life of a mother that director Sarah Polley barely knew and slowly turns into a documentary that is as good as any movie you will see this year.

Where Polley's work goes from mere family movie to something much greater is in how she uses her own quest for answers to illuminate why & how we tell stories in the first place, especially in the form of film.

Polley's compassion and curiosity again mark her as both a heartfelt and unforgiving filmmaker.

Suspenseful, unpredictable, mature, tender and funny. A triumph.

UFC fan uses guillotine choke to hold off attempted carjacker after watching UFC 160

Stockton, Calif., is the home of UFC fighters Nick and Nate Diaz, but another Stocktonian made the news for his MMA moves over the weekend. Abel Simmons was returning home from watching UFC 160 with his family when he used a guillotine to hold off a man who was attacking his family.

Simmons' two children were in the backseat of his SUV when the family car pulled into their driveway. A man walked up to the car and started banging on the windows, and then tried to open the door. Simmons, who was in the passenger seat, got out and scuffled with the man until he had him in a guillotine.

"I had him in a guillotine choke. And he wasn't getting out of that. I had that lock really tight," said Simmons. "I just held him in place and said, 'Well, guess you are going to jail tonight buddy.'"

Simmons' wife called 911. When the police arrived, the man tried fighting them, as well. He was arrested for attempted carjacking, battery and resisting arrest.

Watching UFC fights is not meant to be educational, but at least Simmons did learn something from tuning into Saturday's bouts. Now, if you've watched a few fights and haven't had any kind of training, you probably shouldn't go patrolling the streets looking to stop injustice with a choke hold. But it's nice to know that watching fights helped one family stay safe. The same can't be said for people who tuned into the basketball playoffs this weekend.

Duolingo (for Android)

Learning a new language takes a lot of time and practice, and usually a lot of money, too. But one service, Duolingo (4 stars), has proved that great language-learning material doesn't have to cost a dime. The Duolingo website has been one of my favorite places to brush up on foreign words and phrases, and the iPhone app, which has offline content so you can keep learning no matter where you go, is equally stellar. Welcome to the circle, Android users: the small company behind this great language program has finally launched a Duolingo app for your mobile devices, too.

I've used Duolingo on the Web and iPhone over many months to brush up on my Spanish, but also to complement some self-learning from scratch that I had been doing in German using the audio-intensive Pimsleur program. The Android version is quite similar to the iPhone app. Overall, Duolingo works best, in my opinion, when you couple it with some other language-learning program or practice, or to refresh a language you've studied before. But it's an excellent app and service, and as far as truly free mobile apps for language-learning go, Duolingo is easily the best. It's even better in my opinion than a few paid language-learning apps, such as Living Language iPad app (requires $19.99 in-app purchase) and the mobile apps for Babbel (requires a membership from $12.95 per month).

From a user's perspective, Duolingo works like most other language-learning programs. You work through exercises or activities to complete lessons, which are part of larger units. The structure is clear, shown on a tree in Duolingo, and the app keeps track of your progress synchronously across both the Android or iPhone app and the Web version. It always remembers where you left off, and on the mobile platforms, it saves locally the most recent lessons you've completed (so you can repeat them if you only barely passed) as well as a few upcoming lessons.

Languages on Duolingo
The most obvious holdback for Duolingo is it doesn't have programs in as many languages as some other companies who have been making language-learning content since the early days of books-on-tape. On Android, the options for English speakers are Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese for now. There are a few other computations if you count speakers of other languages studying English.

If you need to practice a language that may be hard to find, try Rosetta Stone Version 4 TOTALe, which is pricey but very good for beginners, or Pimsleur as a low-cost option (a couple of audio-only units will cost in the neighborhood of $25, depending on the language and delivery method).

Duolingo Exercises on Android
Like the iPhone app, the Duolingo Android app walks you through various exercises to help you practice reading, writing, listening, speaking, and translating your language of choice. You can actually sign up to study as many of the included languages as you want, and a clear menu option lets you toggle between your different courses.

Duolingo's exercises take only a few seconds to complete, which is appropriate for a mobile app. You might, for example, be asked to translate a sentence from English to Spanish or vice versa. Sometimes you'll type the answer long form, and sometimes you'll piece it together from a list of suggested words (compared with the Web app, the Android app swaps out about half the heavy-duty typing with this latter exercise, which is appropriate on the smaller screen). Sometimes the app asks you to speak a phrase or two, and sometimes it asks you to pick the correct translation from a multiple choice list?and there might be more than one correct answer. You can see a few examples of the kinds of exercises included in the app in the slideshow.

Marine: Military sex abuse has deep roots

When Maureen Gard goes running, the flashbacks come: riding in the platoon leader's car, the jokes about her bra size, the fondling and the pinning her down.

She was an 18-year-old Marine at the time and considered her platoon leader a friend when she went for a ride with him to a mall near their base in Virginia. They were classmates training to become Marine musicians.

He drove fast, her cellphone fell between her legs and he reached down to get it, she said. He fondled her knees, legs and stomach, drove to a wooded area behind an abandoned building, and climbed on top of her and pinned her down. He kissed her and kept asking if she liked the encounter. She resisted his advances and was able to get out of the car, she said.

Now 25, Gard is a Meriden resident and a student at Quinnipiac University. Shaped by her experiences, she works hard to raise awareness about military sexual assault. She gives speeches, writes a blog and runs road races to raise money for victims and to dispense her own "therapy."

The U.S. Department of Defense estimates that 26,000 military sexual assaults among women and men occurred in 2012 -- 7,000 more than in 2011.

Only 3,374 victims reported military sexual assaults, the DOD said, with 62 percent of those saying they were retaliated against professionally and socially. Of those who didn't report military sexual assaults, 47 percent told the DOD that they feared reprisals.

In Gard's case, she pressed charges against her platoon leader. During the military's investigation, he left the music program, was given another assignment on base and the two still lived in the same complex.

Gard graduated from the music program and was sent to San Diego as the investigation continued. Months later, other female Marines came forward and reported him for sexual offenses. He was dismissed from the U.S. Marine Corps, but didn't receive a dishonorable discharge.

"Nothing appears in his record," Gard said. "He's off scot free."

Advocates say the time is ripe for new laws and policies designed to help victims, prevent assaults, ensure that offenders are punished and increase reporting. But advocates also concede it will be difficult to change the military culture surrounding the treatment of women.

Gard said the culture "plays a lot into this whole issue."

She talked about male Marines using the abbreviation WM, which normally refers to a Woman Marine. But in this case, WM means "Walking Mattress," implying that a woman receives a promotion by having sex with superiors.

"I don't think there's going to be a quick change in the military," Gard said.

One bill in Congress would remove control of military sexual assault cases from the pertinent chain of command.

U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, a New Haven Democrat, is one of 83 co-sponsors. DeLauro said the bill would establish "reforms I fear the military cannot make on its own."

It should have been done "years ago," she added.

The bill would establish an office of civilian and military legal experts to investigate cases, create a reporting method, provide safety to victims and keep a database from which convictions would be sent to the National Sex Offender Registry.

A report in April based on a 2011 Pentagon health survey found that more than one out of five female respondents said they experienced unwanted sexual contact by another service member, and nearly a third of military women with gender-related stress were sexually assaulted while in the military.

At the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, many cadets are afraid they will be retaliated against if they report sexual offenses, said Panayiota Bertzikis, executive director of the Military Rape Crisis Center.

The center runs confidential support groups for cadets who have been sexually assaulted. Bertzikis said about 40 women and 10 men attend the groups. The women were assaulted by cadets while most of the men experienced sexual trauma before enrolling at the academy.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Frederick J. Kenney, testifying recently before a Senate subcommittee, said that the academy has "quite a robust training plan in place for the cadets" on the issue, including a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator and a student group trained to confidentially "accompany a victim to a Victim Advocate."

Academy Superintendent, Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz, declined an interview.

Advocates note that men are also victims of sexual assaults. A May Pentagon report shows more men assaulted than women, but a much smaller percentage based on their populations. Some 12,100 women were assaulted out of a total female military population of 200,000, while 13,900 males were assaulted out of 1.2 million military men.

For Gard, the running helps her. It's "a therapeutic way to be by myself and have my own thoughts."

She still has the anxiety and panic attacks, so she carries a knife and pepper spray when she runs.

Gard is training for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. Her run, she said, will be "a celebration of overcoming my sexual assault.''

This story was reported under a partnership with the Connecticut Health I-Team (www.c-hit.org).

Privacy Challenges of Wearable Computing - NYTimes.com

Perhaps the best way to predict how society will react to so-called wearable computing devices is to read the Dr. Seuss children?s story ?The Butter Battle Book.?

The book, which was published in 1984, is about two cultures at odds. On one side are the Zooks, who eat their bread with the buttered side down. In opposition are the Yooks, who eat their bread with the buttered side up. As the story progresses, their different views lead to an arms race and potentially an all-out war.

Well, the Zooks and the Yooks may have nothing on wearable computing fans, who are starting to sport devices that can record everything going on around them with a wink or subtle click, and the people who promise to confront violently anyone wearing one of these devices.

I?ve experienced both sides of this debate with Google?s Internet-connected glasses, Google Glass. Last year, after Google unveiled its wearable computer, I had a brief opportunity to test it and was awe-struck by the potential of this technology.

A few months later, at a work-related party, I saw several people wearing Glass, their cameras hovering above their eyes as we talked. I was startled by how much Glass invades people?s privacy, leaving them two choices: stare at a camera that is constantly staring back at them, or leave the room.

This is not just a Google issue. Other gadgets have plenty of privacy-invading potential. Memoto, a tiny, automatic camera that looks like a pin you can wear on a shirt, can snap two photos a minute and later upload it to an online service. The makers of the device boast that it comes with one year of free storage and call it ?a searchable and shareable photographic memory.?

Apple is also working on wearable computing products, filing numerous patents for a ?heads-up display? and camera. The company is also expected to release an iWatch later this year. And several other start-ups in Silicon Valley are building products that are designed to capture photos of people?s lives.

But what about people who don?t want to be recorded? Don?t they get a say?

Deal with it, wearable computer advocates say. ?When you?re in public, you?re in public. What happens in public, is the very definition of it,? said Jeff Jarvis, the author of the book ?Public Parts? and a journalism professor at the City University of New York. ?I don?t want you telling me that I can?t take pictures in public without your permission.?

Mr. Jarvis said we?ve been through a similar ruckus about cameras in public before, in the 1890s when Kodak cameras started to appear in parks and on city streets.

The New York Times addressed people?s concerns at the time in an article in August 1899, about a group of camera users, the so-called Kodak fiends, who snapped pictures of women with their new cameras.

?About the cottage colony there is a decided rebellion against the promiscuous use of photographing machines,? The Times wrote from Newport, R.I. ?Threats are being made against any one who continues to use cameras as freely.? In another article, a woman pulled a knife on a man who tried to take her picture, ?demolishing? the camera before going on her way.

This all sounds a bit like the Yooks and Zooks battling over their buttered bread.

Society eventually adapted to these cameras, but not without some struggle, a few broken cameras and lots of court battles. Today we live in a world with more than a billion smartphones with built-in cameras. But, there is a difference between a cellphone and a wearable computer; the former goes in your pocket or purse, the latter hangs on your body.

?Most people are not talking about privacy here, they are talking about social appropriateness,? said Thad Starner, who is the director of the Contextual Computing Group at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a technical adviser to the Google Glass team. He said he believed most people are respectful and would not use their wearable computers inappropriately.

Mr. Starner has been experimenting with different types of wearable computers for over 20 years, and he said that although some people are initially skeptical of the computer above his eye, they soon feel comfortable around the device, and him. ?Within two weeks people start to ignore it,? he said. Over the years, his wearable computers have become less obtrusive, going from bulky, very visible contraptions, to today?s sleeker Google Glass.

Mr. Starner said privacy protections would have to be built into these computers. ?The way Glass is designed, it has a transparent display so everyone can see what you?re doing.? He also said that in deference to social expectations, he puts his wearable glasses around his neck, rather than on his head, when he enters private places like a restroom.

But not everyone is so thoughtful, as I learned this month at the Google I/O developer conference when people lurked around every corner, including the bathroom, wearing their glasses that could take a picture with a wink.

By the end of ?The Butter Battle Book,? the arms race has escalated to a point at which both sides have developed bombs that can destroy the world. As two old men, a Yook and a Zook, debate what to do next, the story ends with one saying: ?We?ll just have to be patient. We?ll see, we?ll see.?

Two freight trains collide in Missouri, bringing down overpass

By Tim Bross

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - Two freight trains collided at a rail intersection in rural Missouri on Saturday, triggering the collapse of a highway overpass when at least a dozen rail cars derailed and struck a support pillar, authorities said.

None of the seven people hurt in the fiery crash - two train workers and five occupants of two cars on the overpass - suffered life-threatening injuries, Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said in a statement.

"One train T-boned the other one and caused it to derail, and the derailed train hit a pillar which caused the overpass to collapse," Sheriff's dispatcher Clay Slipis said of the pre-dawn crash near Chaffee, about 15 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau, in southeastern Missouri.

The collision of the BNSF Railway Co and Union Pacific trains also sparked a fire when diesel fuel leaked from one of the train engines, Slipis said.

The crash occurred just over a week after a commuter train derailed in Connecticut, striking another train and injuring more than 70 people during the evening rush hour.

On Thursday, a truck hit a bridge and triggered the partial collapse of the structure in Washington state, sending two cars plunging into the frigid Skagit River and raising concerns about the country's aging infrastructure. Three people were rescued.

In Missouri, Wayne Woods told a regional CBS affiliate that he rushed to the scene as soon as he heard the crash to try to halt traffic as he called in the emergency.

"We heard the crash and we stepped outside and my son said the overpass was down. Then we heard a car's tires squealing like it was coming to a stop and then a crash and a horn continuously blowing," he told KFVS television.

"I got over there, the train was on its side. They got the guys out and lifted them down off the train and got them off the overpass. One was kind of bloody and the other one looked like he was pretty shook up," he said.

NTSB TO INVESTIGATE

There was no immediate word on the cause of the train crash.

Robert Sumwalt, a National Transportation Safety Board member, said in a phone interview that his agency could take about a year to reach a finding on the cause of the crash.

He told reporters earlier the agency will review the railroads' operating procedures and the performance of the train crews.

Terry Williams, a spokesman for the NTSB, said that under normal circumstances a signal would halt traffic on one of the intersecting tracks.

Union Pacific said its train had been primarily carrying auto parts from Illinois to Texas when it struck the side of another train, and that a Union Pacific engineer and conductor were slightly injured, according to spokeswoman Calli Hite.

The Union Pacific locomotive and about a dozen cars derailed in the crash, she added. She said the accident was the second derailment involving one of the company's trains on the same stretch of track, and that the earlier one on January 29 was weather-related.

BNSF said its train, which was 75 cars long, had been hauling scrap metal and was heading south when it was struck, and that none of the crew was injured.

Fast & Furious 6: Made for fans

Fast & Furious 6 will delight fans of the franchise, because there is more of everything. But as a movie, Fast & Furious 6 gets two out of four stars.

You could find out, perhaps, by joining the next space mission to another galaxy, or, slightly easier, you could go to your local multiplex and watch "Fast & Furious 6" without having seen the first five movies.

Should you decide to undertake this anthropological experiment, you'd immediately discover there are things everyone except you already knows. For example: jokes about baby oil and big foreheads are very funny in this universe. Cars, of course, are the most important thing, and of course there are no speed limits. Weapons come next on the list, and the bigger the better ? but in one-on-one physical combat, bald heads are surprisingly effective. Speaking of those fights: They're brutal, yet somehow, no organs get damaged and even bruises are minimal.

And oh yes, bikinis and bottoms are important. Not bikini bottoms ? well, those too ? but bottoms in bikinis. What this has to do with car racing is not entirely clear.

Most importantly, in this universe, there is no such thing as "less is more." More is always more, and so, "Fast & Furious 6" will delight fans of the franchise, because there is more of everything here. Director Justin Lin gives us not only great cars doing ridiculous things at ridiculous speeds, but also a huge army tank and a great stunt involving a giant cargo plane.

Newcomers will be a little confused as to who everyone is, since there is little explanation at this point, but fans will be glad to know their favorites are back, starting with Vin Diesel's Dom, the hotshot driver with the clean-shaven head (the better to butt other heads with) and a strong sense of family. When we first see him, he's careening down a winding cliff road in the Canary Islands with cohort/former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker). Turns out they're heading to the hospital, where O'Conner's wife (and Dom's sister), Mia (Jordana Brewster, in a small role this time) is giving birth. A sweet family moment.

Meanwhile, Dom, on the lam from the U.S. and hugely wealthy from his last venture, is shacked up in a sunny love nest with a gorgeous Brazilian cop (Elsa Pataky). Who needs to work? That's what he tells Hobbs, the insanely buff federal agent played by Dwayne Johnson, when he comes calling, a nemesis from the last film who's now promising immunity in exchange for Dom's help. He wants Dom to nab a villain named Shaw (Luke Evans) ? he's the snarly guy with the tank and the plane and a huge military arsenal which is one little component short of wreaking total havoc.

A reluctant Dom gets on board when he learns that Letty, his former love (Michelle Rodriguez) is working for Shaw. But wait ... wasn't she dead? Well, actually she's alive, but she has amnesia. Anyway, the game is on.

Happily, amid all the noise, the races ? there's a terrific one through the streets of downtown London ? the crashes and the outlandish stunts, there is some humor, and it's very welcome. Particularly funny are Tyrese Gibson as Roman and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges as Tej, Dom's partners in crime. Also back for more adventures are the attractive duo of Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot); Gina Carano is a newcomer as an agent whose fighting skills give Letty a run for her money.

Not everyone gets out alive. As for the lucrative franchise, though, it's more than alive and kicking, judging from the new film's overseas success. A post-credits sequence teases the upcoming seventh film. In the "Fast & Furious" universe, it's not just international criminals who rake it in.

"Fast & Furious 6," a Universal Studios release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and mayhem throughout, some sexuality and language. Running time: 130 minutes. Two stars out of four.

France rules out Iran taking part in Syrian peace talks

By John Irish

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - France's foreign minister on Saturday ruled out Iran taking part in a proposed Syria peace conference, saying Tehran was involved in the conflict and had no desire for peace.

Laurent Fabius will host Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at a dinner on Monday to discuss how to nudge Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition into the talks in Geneva.

Speaking aboard a French aircraft en route to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Fabius said there was no "magic wand" to get warring parties to the negotiating table even though it appeared Assad's government had agreed to attend.

Russia has said Iran must be included in the peace conference, which was jointly proposed by Moscow and Washington and could convene in the next few weeks.

But Fabius said Iran's presence in Syria through its officers who were "directing operations" and through its Hezbollah proxy demonstrated that it had no place at the negotiating table.

"Yes the Russians want Iran to take part in Geneva, but we're opposed because Iran is not after a political solution and on the contrary has thrown itself directly into that battle."

Iran has denied it has forces in Syria supporting Assad's army, saying the accusations were invented by the "true enemies of Syria".

Fabius also said that with complex negotiations coming up later in the year between major powers that include France, U.S. and Russia over Iran's nuclear program, allowing Iran to take part in the Syrian conference would complicate those talks.

The United States and European Union have so far shied away from directly arming the rebels, but have given them "non-lethal" support, while Arab backers like Qatar and Saudi Arabia send them weapons.

Fabius is due to meet UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan for talks on Saturday. The crisis in Syria and Iran's nuclear program will top the agenda, given Gulf Arab states' accusations about Tehran meddling in their affairs by stoking unrest.
