Fans of the actor were shocked when a pic of a woman's "downstairs" popped up in their Twitter feed from the actor, with the words "Hairstyle worn by some Orthodox Jewish men" accompanying the photo.
No sooner had the snap gone up, it was quickly removed by Crowe, who then posted an apology.
"Hey, I don't know what that was," he wrote. "Just having a chat with Dani when the phone went ballistic. Sorry, gone."
Crowe, who normally just posts Twitter updates on his daily exercise regime, is apparently on holiday with his estranged wife Danielle Spencer and their two kids, Charles and Tennyson.
"A lot of people castigate me for posting me workouts and stuff like that but it makes me go back to the gym," he recently told New Zealand television. "In a funny sort of way I feel this responsibility."
The 49-year-old admits he loves the freedom of social media and the chance to prove who he is instead of letting the tabloids make things up.
"What I like about it is that, I've had to put up with 25 years of people telling you what you're supposed to think about me or what I might think and here's just this direct line for people who care," he said.
He also likes being on Twitter for the direct access it gives him to his fans.
"I'm intrigued by people, that's probably why I do my job," Crowe explained. "People interest me, and they piss me off too!"
Reps for the actor also state that Crowe's Twitter was hacked and that he had nothing to do with the naughty pic being posted.
