But it?s impressive that the most controversial part of President Obama?s trip didn?t revolve around the economy or hot button political issues, but over the president?s choice of eating at Stubb?s. Pachanga Festival
If a weekend goes by in Austin without a music festival, it's not a true weekend. The Pachanga Latino Music Festival saves the weekend by celebrating Austin?s rich blend of Latino culture with performances sampling a wide variety of Latin-themed music.
With rock, funk and hip-hop flavored with everything from tejano to cumbia, Pachanga brings Latino culture from across the globe to Fiesta Gardens. The kids are also invited to tag along for Ni?o?s Rock Pachanga, an interactive activity area for the little one?s featuring more kid-centric performances by Pachanga artists.
Ballet Austin presents Giselle
Taking your mother to the ballet is almost a surefire way to show her how much you appreciate everything she did to raise you, and Ballet Austin recognizes this tradition with weekend performances of the classic ballet, Giselle.
Conceived by author and ballet critic Th?ophile Gautier in honor of ballerina Carlotta Grisi, Giselle tells the tragic tale of a young peasant girl who falls in love with a disguised prince and then dies from a broken heart when she learns that they can?t be together. That?s just the first act, because the best ballet always has a good tragedy.
Afternoon Tea at the Drafthouse with Little Women
Brunch is another standby for Mother?s Day, but if you haven?t made reservations at this point, you might be in trouble. Luckily, the Alamo Drafthouse offers an alternative that mixes entertainment with tea and some treats to nibble on.
Afternoon Tea at the Drafthouse honors the mothers in our lives with a screening of the 1994 adaption of Louisa May Alcott?s Little Women. Starring Susan Sarandon as the loving and strongly feminist matriarch, Marmee, Little Women teaches us all the importance of listening to your mother and maybe getting along with your siblings.
Short Short Fringe Festival
We already detailed the weekend debut of the Short Short Fringe Festival, a one-act play festival featuring plays written by playwrights looking for their first foray into the craft.
These seven plays will be performed for one night only at the New Movement Theater on Sunday and will provide a glimpse into some of the hidden gems in Austin playwriting. Not only will the evening offer plenty of entertainment for theatre nerds, it might inspire other introverted playwrights to take the plunge and write something the next time the festival returns later this fall.
