Google Wallet Drops Plans For Physical Card

Google Wallet Card

Google has yet to get a firm grip on its own ?Wallet,? so one might be leery of letting them put their hands into your own wallet. One of the announcements at the Google I/O developer conference scheduled for next week was to include details of Google Wallet and an actual physical card, but it seems now that only an updated Wallet product will be discussed, but no card.

Google CEO was not happy with a glitch run-through demo and killed the physical card idea, and this led to the ouster of Wallet head, Osama Bedier. Google also shifted former Local and Commerce big shot Jeffrey Huber to its Google X unit. The Wallet program is now in the Ads and Commerce division, with SVP Sridhar Ramaswamy directly in charge of the Wallet project. Another recent addition to the Wallet team, Nik Sathe, was former VP of Architecture and Infrastructure at eBay?s PayPal unit.

Google, always wanting to gather information about its customers, assume having a physical card, which customers are familiar and comfortable using, would provide them much information about the buying habits of their customers and thusly work that into advertisers? dollars and more profit. These offline purchases would only add to the buying interests/habits tracked at both Google Play and Google checkouts on the web.

The Wallet?s focus started out as NFC payments that would require smartphones to include that feature, as well as merchants utilizing a reader of sorts; adding a physical card could offer an alternative. Google maintains they are not trying to become their own bank, which could really shake things up in the credit industry, only offering more options.

All of these recent events made Google?s CEO Page realize when it comes to peoples? purchases and their money, Google needs to do it right from the beginning and not lose consumer confidence. After all, people were leery about ?waving? their credit card to make a purchase, now they are asking us to ?wave? our smartphone!

In the comments let us know if you are looking forward to purchasing items via NFC.
